If you drive the speed limit and obey traffic laws in New Orleans… someone in a 1999 Honda Civic with Saran Wrap for a rear windshield will run you off the fricking road. Guaranteed

It's pretty awful. I drive all over from Texas to Florida every month and it's unreal how much worse it gets around Nola.

My driving got better after moving to Orleans Parish. The skills really build up when you have to dodge unemployed locals walking across 4 lanes of traffic who refuse to use or even acknowledge the crosswalk

Everyone thinks the drivers in their own city are the worst.

Traffic Laws are at best optional. The closer you get to ghetto areas the worse it is. No stopping at stop signs or red lights pretty much ever. Going 100+ down residential streets. Its the wild west out there.

Certain segments just do not give any fricks whatsoever.

And not a single license plate in sight

The streets make your car age in dog years

And then the window smashers come and put the thing down

This is true, but NOLA is an exceptional case.

it is frankly insane. You won't come close to it anywhere else except 3rd world countries

I have been saying this for years about Nola:

Half the drivers don't know where they are, and the other half don't know how to drive.

I lived there 10 yrs ago and it is the wild west. No traffic cops so people just do what they want. Dallas and Atlanta are far worse though. Partly because of the sheer number of cars and also partly because of the way people drive

Does the bad driving come from getting shot at? Or do people shoot at the bad drivers? A real chicken or the egg scenario here.

with no traffic enforcement, this is the result.

Baton Rouge is home to the worst drivers. New Orleans is home to the worst road rage.

While true, New Orleans is certainly in the upper tier.

Between the terrible roads, complete lack of respect for lights and signs (not talking occasionally missing one by accident but regular choice to ignore by many), often intense speeding and weaving, and the random meandering of pedestrians- it’s a special level of adventure going out on these streets.

There used to be NOPD traffic cops who set up speed traps, brake tag checkpoints, and DUI checkpoints. That all ended thanks to a variety of reasons, but mostly thanks to Mitch Landrieu and Barack Obama's federal consent decree that gutted the NOPD, as well as the George Floyd summer of love in 2020. In short, thanks to democrats.

It really is the wild west. I have stopped getting brake tags; there is no one to give me a ticket. What concerns me most is that this situation is emboldening drunk driving in the city. There is no one around to hand out DUIs and no incentive to call an Uber or cab. It is a life safety issue in a city full of bars and partiers.

Probably so. This morning two cars ran a red light at a turn in front of me on Poydras and Claiborn and I actually pulled up and blew my horn at one of them. Probably could have been shot for doing that.

And the stretch of I-10 between the city and through Nola East is crazy town with the crappy drivers.

Luckily overall traffic itself in and around Nola isn't all that bad so you can get around rather quickly.
