It’s definitely not ideal for the reporter to get a lemon but any car model has some of them. I’m much more curious about how common it is, not if issues could plausibly happen.

I’ve always said, only idiots buy Land Rovers

Ok..watched. What a shite show.
This is reminiscent of the Disco 1 and 2.
They kind of fixed things with the 3 and 4, which still have some perplexing issues.
I bought my LR3 with very high miles (90k I think). Sunroof wouldn’t open and the fridge didn’t work. That was fine. That truck actually did great...had to replace the alternator, the control arms and some other minor stuff. Repairs were less than a monthly car payment and it never stranded me so I was good.
Until that fateful day when I went through a cheap car wash. Some sort of coping failed and water got into the control module. Ended up costing more to fix than it was worth, and that transmission was just waiting to fail, it hadn’t, and was having no issues, but I knew it would at some point. I believe I was up to 140k miles. So I sold it to the shop. They’ve still got it using it as their shop car.
I loved that truck for a lot,of reasons, but they do so much stupid mind boggling shite (like where the ECM is located). A really simple, but fricking stupid complaint was with the wipers. You guys in LA might not have to do this much, but when it’s going to snow or ice, I pull my wipers off the windshield so they don’t freeze to it..the wipers on the LRs will not do that. You can’t pull them up to where they stand unsupported off the glass..
I bought my first Toyota (4R ORP) and expect it to last for 300k.
Wife has. ‘13 LR4. Bought CPO. it’s very nice, etc.. had very few issues. Paid it off 4 months ago.(0% interest) ... since she paid it off, we’ve had $3k in repairs..
I really enjoyed taking the LR’s on some not too hard off road, as they perform great..but if I were somewhere truly remote, I’d be very fricking nervous waiting for something to go wrong..
I really wish I could have gotten/afforded a Cruiser before they stopped making them.

I've been shopping for a new suv and have to admit the Defender's looks impressed me.
In the end I can't pull the trigger. Looks aside, the reliability issues and not so great fuel efficiency kill it for me.

Jaguar Land Rover is an Indian car company.
I think that speaks for itself.

Original land rovers were awesome. They could be repaired about anywhere. The city versions not so much. Waaaaay too much reliability on electronics.

Those are famous for being terrible vehicles but so are Jeeps and I haven’t had a problem with them.

Car and Driver’s 2021 Defender broke down too. They only had it a week.

Jeeps are vastly more reliable than Land Rovers.
Seriously - we talk smack how crappy Ford or Dodge can be...but the American carmakers don’t build anything as unreliable or as costly to own as a modern Land Rover.

Reminds me of Jaguar.
He bought her one and about a year later I asked him how they liked the car.
He said “I consider myself a fairly well-off man. I now know that I can’t afford a Jaguar.”

Wife had a loaded Evoque, it was flawless, never had an issue with it. Held its value superbly

There’s a 2001 or so that I drive by everyday heading to work. Just love the look of that era Land Rover. Probably not a coincidence that it’s in the same exact spot every time I drive by, but it looks fantastic. I really wanted to get one but when comparing the LR to a similar era 100 series, I went with the cruiser.
And yes the prices of land cruisers are insane. Used ones even more so. Only advice would be keep a watchful eye on the used truck web sites and see if you can’t find a gem pop up. A late model 200 series with low miles will only go up in value. Hell I couldn’t believe the prices people were paying for 100 series now a days. Some guys on this site were telling me what I could get for my 99 and I about fell out.

Any car that is sold with a near complete mechanic's tool bag because they just expect it to break down frequently is garbage. I love the way those old Jags look, but I would never, NEVER own one.

i have 4 land rover stories
- next door neighbor had a discovery and turned the engine on to cool it off as he was gathering his golf clubs..maybe idling for 10-15 minutes. the radiator EXPLODED in his driveway and the dealer sent a tow truck to haul it back to work on. when he went to pick it up and ask why the mechanic said 'land rovers are designed for cool dry climates and can't handle the heat & humidity of the southeast' wut?
- my old boss hit a guy turning in front of us (idiot in inner lane had motioned the guy across) in his discovery with me in the passenger seat going about 25mph; airbags & the whole 9 yards. when we got out of the vehicle there was virtually nothing left of the front end fenders, grill protector shot about 50 feet down the road (exploded like spaghetti) and pretty much had to total it out even though it was brand new
- my ex fought me in court during divorce to let her buy a used discovery (told the judge i was being controlling by telling her to buy something else and the judge agreed with her and ordered me to let her buy anything she wanted) and a week after purchasing it the bottom LITERALLY fell out of it (something to do with the axles) in the middle of the interstate and after rescuing her I had the joy of paying $5,500 to fix that. less than 2 months later she sold it for $1K after 2 or 3 more breakdowns. the funny part is this had just come off a lease and the local dealer who sold it to us had METICULOUS service records on it. never EVER buy a land rover without a comprehensive warranty.
- my best friend from LSU bought a really nice brand new range rover in 2005 and a year later the engine failed and the dealership said "well you need a new short block; unfortunately they don't make them anymore so we're going to have to look for a used one'
ranger rovers el oh el
