Need Veterans advice
Distant. Cousin died last year at 76, served in USAF from 63 to 67, stationed at barksdale AFB aircraft mechanic deployed to Guam in 64, Made trip to Laos to change an engine . Trip last a couple of days, death certificate incident ages cause of death was Alzheimer’s, cerebrovascular disease, arterial vascular disease , Wife suspected Agent Orange, Submits request to VA for death benefits, tell s VA in error he went to Vietmina , va advises that they have no records of his trip to Vietnam , but it appears he did indeed come in contact with Agent Orange, and if she can prove his trip to Vietnam , then she’s entitled to benefits, seems to me whoever investigated should have looked to see where else he may have come in contact with Agent Orange , I’ve agreed to try to help , Am wondering if the people at Barksdale keep records of deployments . Any suggestions

Call these people and hire them. If you hire them the payment will be a set amount of the payment if any is received. Shouldn't have to.come out of pocket anything.

re: Need Veterans advice
What makes you suspect Agent Orange?

2 days in Laos as a mechanic doesn’t seem like much exposure, if any.

What is the death benefit pay out?

re: Need Veterans advice
First off, you need to ask the question "When did they start using Agent Orange?"

answer is 1962...so if you can prove he was actually in Vietnam

1964 seems a bit early for that...

think they started using it(we did,) in '62, and yes it was used in Laos, but if the dude went to an airbase for two days I doubt he had much if any exposure

ETA: "cause of death was Alzheimer’s, cerebrovascular disease, arterial vascular disease"

not typically attributed to Agent Orange

Try to find a good rep at the local VA office. Don't try to do anything online as the process is convoluted and only leads to frustration. My dad was exposed to AO in Vietnam and the local VA rep helped us tremendously.

I don't see how he could have been exposed to copious amounts of agent orange if he just spent a couple of days on an air base in Laos, unless he was huffing the shite.

Agreed and because it is not on the list more proof will be needed like a study from a medical journal or statement from doctor saying this was caused by agent orange.

Doubt this ends in a benefit and doubt he had much exposure if what you are saying is true. Good to get the military records and maybe there is a different type of benefit to which she could be eligible.

I strongly encourage anyone reading this to get copies of military records from your aging parents and have them speak to a rep at their local VA before they pass especially if they are leaving behind a spouse. Some benefits may need to be issued before death.

You didn't mention DD214. It all starts with that form. She should have it in his discharge file if they kept one. VA lawyer should have asked for it and pointed out importance. Problem I see is a couple of days may not be in records. I had 28 days in Germany that doesn't show.

Not all who were in Vietnam came even close to it.
