Need some medical advice, Doctors, nurses and other medical semi-pros of the OT
Posted by ColdTurkey on 8/29/20 at 3:15 pm60
Started a new job a few weeks ago and I'm using my hands a ton working 12 hour shifts. Both hands are numb and have tingling and moderate to severe pain going up my arm. Planning to go to whatever walk in clinic is open in Monroe today and see what the deal is, but I figure its probably carpal tunnel from what I've read online. What's the best treatment and how long am I screwed for? I can handle a good bit of pain but this shite is on another level

Go to a real doctor as your first step. I’d suggest finding an Internal Medicine doctor who will give you a proper examination.
I’m not a doctor and I didn’t sleep in a Holiday Inn.
I just have common sense.

Go to a bone and joint doc. My kid just got diagnosed with carpal tunnel and right now it’s medication and wraps but if it doesn’t improve it could mean surgery.

Go somewhere and get some carpal tunnel splints. Most pharmacies will have these.

This is my biggest fear, my mom had carpal tunnel stemming from over extending her hand during a fall and had to have surgery.

I find Fred's anger very off-putting.

are you sitting with your arms bent? Sounds like possible ulnar nerve.

Could be pinched nerve in the wrist (carpal tunnel) or in the back of your elbow where your "Funny bone" is (cubital tunnel) or in your spine.
Try icing these areas to reduce swelling and see if you can find the problem area. If it's your back it's probably close to your shoulder blades. If it's wrist or elbow you can wear a brace while you sleep to keep that joint straightened.
I've had this before and it sucks because it would wake me up in the night with a burning or numb or freezing sensation in my hand.
Don't ignore it because nerve damage can become permanent if left unchecked.
I'm not a doctor just experienced the same symptoms and I'm good at research

Ring, middle, index and thumb in both hands and operator's assistant at a mill.

I had surgery for carpal tunnel in January. There wasn't much pain after surgery and I was able to use the hand from the beginning. I just had to limit lifting for a couple of months with that arm. No physical therapy was required. I also had ulnar entrapment surgery on the same arm at the same time.
