Had the same issue. Started using the Neti squeeze bottle. My ENT said the best time to use it is in the morning. Also Nasacort if it starts to get bad. It took a while, but it finally weened me off of the OTC nasal sprays like Afrin.

This is exactly what I'm using. I'm guessing it's the generic afrin. Has the same warning.

Sitting here right now. My left nasal passage is completely fine, my right nasal passage is at like 30%.

I'll start using these other techniques.

Afrin cuts off the blood to your sinuses much like a tourniquet. Do not use more than directed. Over use will severely frick up your sinuses.

Try X clear for when you just need to breathe better but aren’t severely congested. Over the counter all natural. It’s works well short term and you can’t over use it.

So what really causes this issue in us? Is it just allergies?

I'm honestly not aware that I'm allergic to anything.

Dude I've been there multiple times. I went from 1x daily to 2x all the way to about every 1/2 hour. Getting off of it sucks, but you will kick it in a about a week. You are going to have to go cold turkey and just freakin suffer for for a little bit, but it does improve. I haven't used any in a couple years but when I do it will be 1 squirt up 1 nostril and I won't even think about using it again until the next day and then it will be 1 squirt in the other.

Funny story... when I was first going through the withdrawal I want into a walmart pharmacy like a junkie looking through the nasal spray isle trying to find something that said non habit forming. I finally found a dusty bottle of something that said it had Capsaicin in it, which is what is in hot peppers. I paid for it and ripped that bottle open. I was sititng at a red light and took a hit that would make an elephant cry and I shite you not I went blind for a few seconds.

Afrin is such a Godsend if you use it correctly

I wait as long as possible until I just can't sleep otherwise, then I cut off at 3 days as directed. For whatever reason I lived most of my life going through cold cycles without using it, ultimately ending up completely unable to breath through my nose for 2-3 days each time. It's a miracle.

May see how it works on a more steady basis. I don't think it works as well as the afrin does tho.

Nasal Steroids can take a few days of daily use to get the full effect. I would go see an ENT and heed his/her advice.

Had a similar problem, and this is how I broke it.

Saline at least twice a day and if you need it during the day. Zyrtec D was my go to, but I had/have bad allergies to dust, pet hair, and pollen.

I would use a Neti pot in the morning to try to flush everything out. Couldn't do it at night because fluid would sometimes get lodged and cause me to cough at night as it drained

I would still use the Afrin at night until I no longer needed anything during the day (2-3 days). Once I was fine during the day, I switched to Flonase for about 1 week. I get ridiculous nose bleeds with Flonase, so had to go cold turkey with nothing else for a few more days. Took just under 2 weeks for me to break it, but I was an avid user for years.

I’ve been doing this for at least 20 years with no complications. Every single night.

Switch to Flonase. You can use it as much as you need without the rebound congestion you’ll get with Afrin. You can only use Afrin for 3-4 days at a time.

I’ve had a lifetime of nasal congestion issues.

Also, use local honey daily. It works and eliminates congestion altogether for many people.

You are just going to have to bite the bullet and go cold turkey. The rebound congestion will suck for a little while, but it will go away. Your nasal tissue got used to the vasoconstriction of the drug, it is going to relax more on the rebound, but will go back to normal. The Flonase isn't going to be too much benefit to the rebound swelling, but it will at least help with the allergy part.

I take Adderall which is also vasoconstrictive and the first sign I notice of it wearing off is my sinuses and nose start to get congested.

I was in EXACTLY your same shoes about 4-5 years ago. IMO, I wasn't "addicted" to Affirn. I was "addicted" to breathing. Unfortunately, it got to a point where I literally could not breath through my nose without using Affrin. In some ways I did feel like crack addict because I had multiple bottles everywhere. My house. My office. My car. My briefcase. My dopp kit. This went on probably about 2-3 years.

I had long used the nasal spray periodically for several years. But only when I had a cold/congestion and only for a day or two at a time. It always worked and then I didn't need it again until the next time I was sick. I don't quite remember when it got to the point I was using it every day, but it did. And I had to use it every 5-6 hours.

At some point I found old bottles of that shite in all kinds of places and realized how ridiculous it was that I needed that stuff to breath. I decided that was enough. Initially I tried to use the saline solution to "ween" myself off of Afrin, but it never worked.

Eventually I just went cold turkey. No Affrin. No saline. Nothing. It sucked for about a week. I couldn't breath through my nose at all and I sounded like darth vader constantly having to breath through my mouth. But after that week I was pretty much back to normal and can happily say that crystal clear devil is no longer a part of my life.

Unfortunately, now I snore like a freight train (whereas a didn't really before). I don't have medical proof, but I suspect that daily use really F'd up my sinuses. Point being, just bite the bullet and get off of it ASAP. It will suck for a bit, but it's worth it.

Keep an eye on your BP while taking these if you are predisposed to be hypertensive.

You gotta quit cold turkey. Nasal steroids and saline rinses can help a little but you have to accept that you will be congested for a week or two before you start to notice real improvement. Unless you quit that stuff your nose will never be normal.
