whether it’s for a glass on the first pour or a bowl of cereal on the last of the carton. I insist that it’s freaking weird and nobody “shakes their milk”—maybe chocolate milk but you don’t shake a carton of 2% like a maniac. She says I’m the weird one for being a non-shaker.

What’s the verdict here? Y’all shakers?

We did when I was younger, but not when I was older. Maybe she grew up with less money and this is some sort of "make it last longer" thing?

She came from humble means but says that she didn’t learn it growing up but has no explanation on when this started but has done it her entire life.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense either. What are you really saving by shaking?

I'm a non shaker, but I think it's important we establish the degree of shakitude here OP. Is she just sloshing it around a little, or is this full on shake like it's a jug of orange juice with pulp? If it's the latter, that's insanity.

Weird hill to die on.

Give her this one, and dig in on something that matters.

I didn’t link this with adulterous behavior but you just admitted to being pro-shake thus you’re a psycho too.

There is an actual reason for this. Before milk was homogenized, and delivered daily, by milk man etc, you would shake it before you poured it to keep chucks of butter etc form forming on top etc. (Don’t ask me how i know this lol)

So her mom may have seen her mom do this, so she does it, abs passes it down.

No u don’t have to shake homogeneous milk

Nothing to do with making it last longer. It’s a holdover practice. It’s a practice that goes back to when farmers actually got milk from the cow instead of the way most of us do now from the store. It’s to mix the fat (cream) with the rest of the milk as it rises to the top while sitting. Homogenization breaks the fat into tiny particles, so it is not necessary for store bought milk.

That’s interesting history. And makes the most sense for an explanation.

If that’s not the truth, it’s exceptionally good BS. It sounds pretty legit though.
