Microchip Shortage is pounding Ford - F-series outsold by Ram and Silverado

Even if Ford restarts 100% production now, they'll still be handily beaten by General Motors by years end. GM has elected to borrow microchips from less profitable models to keep full sized trucks and SUV factories humming along.
If the big 3 don't sourcing more of their hardware domestically after all of this, their CEO's need to be fired.

The Ford F-Series fell from the top of the sales charts in the second quarter of 2021 for the first time in years.
The full-size truck line was outsold by both Ram and Chevrolet to finish in third place.
The F-Series has ended the last 39 years as the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. The last time the F-Series suffered such a blow was when the confluence of a poor economy and high gas prices saw several car models outperform it May 2008.
The ongoing semiconductor shortage was largely to blame. Production of all F-Series models dropped from a monthly high for the year so far of 94,305 in March to 45,008 in June as inventories dwindled from 123,000 to 67,400. Sales through the first half of the year have declined 1.5%.
"When the semiconductor shortage hit the F-Series, all of the red flags went up," AutoForecast Solutions Vice President Sam Fiorani told FOX Business." Things like this haven’t happened to the F-Series very often in the last forty-plus years of its sales dominance. Continued troubles with the supply chain and Ford will see a dramatic hit to its bottom line."
Ford has been building some trucks without all of the required chips and holding them for delivery until the parts become available. The Detroit Free Press reported that a new supply of semiconductors coming in now will help get thousands of those trucks to dealers.
If the big 3 don't sourcing more of their hardware domestically after all of this, their CEO's need to be fired.

Maybe people realized Ford sucks?

The Ecoboost is killing Ford's sales more than the chip shortage.

can we even get the components for the chips domestically?

Doesn’t take a microchip shortage for me not to buy a Ford

GM also decided earlier on to focus only on the truck models that aren't as reliant on these microchips for critical features. So they are moving a lot of work trucks and stripped down models. And from what I understand, they are selling everything they can build.
And their decision to sell trucks without the microchips that enable cylinder deactivation and stop/start technology is probably going to lead to more customer satisfaction anyways.

We outsource most silicone.
So, no.
And the issue lies more along the actual mining of it versus the supply chain.
While most chips are made in China, 25% are still made in vietnam/Indonesia/korea.

I know the new trucks had a lot of problems, but I thought they'd have finally fixed the Ecoboost by now.

That's what I figured. I can't remember where I read it but I was under the impression that China controls most of the mining/refining of rare earth elements that go in to the chips.

I have an f-150 work truck and this feature has nearly killed me twice. The fricking thing died when I pulled out into traffic after this feature failed to start the engine again properly. I can’t believe no one has died because of this feature yet.

no it isn’t. As if the ecoboost is the only option.

We have the raw materials. We do not have the factories to make the chips nor do we have the permission of the EPA to go get the materials. Mining for precious metals is a nasty process. Really bad for the environment where it’s done/really expensive to do it in an environmentally friendly way.

I'll be honest I've had 2 ecoboost F-150s and taken both of them over 250,000 miles with zero turbo problems. Outside of normal items (battery, breaks, and fluids) I've only had to replace the water pump on the 2015 and the hub lockers on the 2011 due to a vacuum leak causing damage when disengaging the 4 wheel drive. Currently on my 3rd ecoboost in a 2019 expedition. I don't get peoples complaints

You don’t mine silicon.
You can pick silica off the ground at any beach……
The zone refinement process is very energy intensive though.

My wife and I have only owned Fords. A total of four vehicles. We will soon be in the market for a new truck and SUV and will most likely not look at a single Ford. While all of our vehicles have had rather reliable engines, they've had enough small to moderate defects to drive a person insane.

The main complaint is it is a turbo V6. Embarrassing to put a V6 in a full-size truck.

Ford should put that twin turbo in the mustang but it would smoke the GT and then no one would buy the GT anymore.
