quote:

“Tornadoes that occur in the Southern Tornado Alley are far less predictable than in the Great Plains Tornado Alley, often making them more deadly.” Not true; you might consider actually speaking with a meteorologist in the “STA” next time.

quote:

CNN: While there are more tornadoes overall in the Great Plains Tornado Alley, they're more likely to be deadly in the Southern Tornado Alley.

Here's why.

The below image is missing the legend showing the two "Tornado alleys" and the death tolls of tornadoes, the darker the green, the deadlier.

The CNN article does go on to say that the higher number of mobile homes in the South do contribute to the higher death toll, which is true and no one is disputing.

Also, the South has a much denser population. I don't think there is anywhere in the South that a tornado can run 20+ miles and not hit a small to moderately sized town. That happens all the time out on the Plains.

James Spann is a good man and one hell of a meteorologist.

There's also just way more ppl per square mile in the south with way more nighttime tornadoes and frankly, with more people comes more uneducated people who aren't smart enough to take precautions

Regardless, all hail Spann

I wouldn’t say tornadoes here are unpredictable. In fact, most tornadoes, particularly those that are stronger, are warned in a very timely manner.

It’s not just trailers, it’s also basements. A lot of people don’t have basements in the south so there’s no where great to shelter.

Yeah, that's a pretty idiotic statement in that article.

Its due to

1. Population density
2. Trees
3. Lack of visibility especially on the highways

You can see it coming from a long way off on the Plains and act accordingly

Here you don’t know it’s gonna hit you until it’s on top of you

I had at least a 45 minute warning before they felt the tornado would hit Mayfield. I was at the church basement 30 minutes prior. If the candle factory would’ve been evacuated, the death toll would’ve been sixteen instead of 24.

Another complicating issue is the propensity for multiple generations of the same family to build homes and live on the same tract of land. Kids building homes on the same land of their parents and grandparents is a much bigger deal in the SE than pretty much anywhere in the country.

This goes on in most all the small to moderate sized towns strewn across the geographical area, and when storms roll through they can wipe out multiple generations in one fell swoop.

There's a study involving this somewhere. I'd have to dig to find it.

Do you know if anyone involved has persued legal action against the owners? When the worker's stories started coming out it seemed like a deal that was ripe for lawsuits.

Anyone who is an expert in anything knows that media articles and coverage about their area of expertise are often half baked and very inaccurate. It makes you wonder if the media are right about anything they report.

I haven’t heard anything on the news about it.

They had built a new bigger factory on the north side of town and was close to moving into it when the tornado hit the old factory. I guess things are business as usual.
