This week sees a major clash between the naval forces of the Japanese and the Allies. Both sides take big damage, though on the tactical level it is a victory for the Japanese. Operationally, however, they must postpone their attacks towards Port Moresby. They are busy making plans all the while, though, for their upcoming attack against Midway Atoll in the Central Pacific. They also finally have success ending an offensive this week with the conquest of the Philippines when Corregidor falls. Japan's ally Germany begins an offensive of their own this week on the Kerch Peninsula. The Allies, for their part, launch an offensive of their own this week against Vichy French-held Madagascar, and they take the main port, Diego Suarez.

Yorktown damaged, but was patched up in time to answer the bell at Midway.

big part of this battle which often gets overlooked is while we dont sink zuikaku or shokaku we mauled airgroups/damaged them enough to keep them out the Midway Operation.

Big difference in facing 4 Japanese carriers instead of 6

Even with coral see operation losses. Had japan not used two CVLs on diversion attack on Dutch Harbor. Just use if them for CAP or back up could have turned the battle

Was it the Yorktown or Enterprise that was crippled, limped back to Pearl Harbor, and was given 3 days to become sea-worthy and set sail for Midway?

1942 I think the Japanese overreached. They should have concentrated and maybe come after Pearl Harbor once again..Midway was nothing but a thorn.

Held their gains in the south and tried to knock us out..but further east with everything they had. Forget Australia..no feint to the north..everything right at Hawaii.

No Coral Sea..No Attu and Kiska..no Midway..Let us have Guadalcanal. Take Hawaii. They wipeout our carriers there and take the islands they push us all the way back to the West Coast and all the other goals then fall into their laps.

Our big advantage was that we knew their plans. We would have known if they were headed to Pearl and we could have prepared.

They never had a chance and Yamamoto knew it. His only hope and prayer was destroying the U.S. Pacific Fleet in a single battle of decision. Even then that wouldn’t have helped them as we had about a dozen Essex-class carriers being built along with the South Dakota and Iowa-class battleships under construction.

A Japanese victory at Midway wouldn’t have brought us to the negotiating table, it would have merely prolonged the Pacific War by about a year.

We HAD broken their codes true, but we still would have been outnumbered in carriers at that time. They could have had as many as 6 heavy and 6 light carriers vs our four, since Enterprise would still be with the fleet, Coral Sea not having been fought.
