It is 247 weeks since Germany invaded Poland. Here is what was going on 79 years ago during the week of 14-20 May 1944:

quote:

In Italy, the Allies finally overcome Monte Cassino and break through the Gustav Line; in Burma Merrill's Marauders surprise the Japanese and take Myitkyina Airfield; in China, it's the Japanese who are playing offense, as Operation Ichi Go and the siege of Luoyang continue. That's the field action, but there's big planning behind the scenes for major June offensives going on by both the Western Allies and the Soviets.

There will likely be another long absence from me for multiple weeks. So if someone wants to keep posting these updates every Saturday in lieu of my absence, more power to them.

All is well. It’s just the price of being in the Navy and on the sea part of your sea-shore rotation.

My uncle was a battalion sergeant major in the Marauders and fought in Burma and Myitkyina. He didn’t talk about it at all until he was much older. The Marauders used to have reunions every year but he refused to go at first because he did not want his family to be exposed to the rough, tough and uncouth guys he served with. Eventually started going and he said “all there were was a bunch of nice old guys.”

He was one of the kindest and most considerate men I have ever known. However, apparently he was a bad arse during the war.

I went to the last Marauders reunion several years ago at the WWII museum. They stopped because there were so few surviving members.

RIP uncle. I miss you.
