It's a motivation beyond money. Mars colonization is an epic step for the advancement of our species. Our sun will eventually expand and kill all life on earth before it shrinks and becomes a white dwarf. Someone has got to start the process. Could we wait another few hundred thousand years, sure, but why wait.
