The Louisiana Senate has overwhelmingly backed a proposal to require all 5-year-old children to attend kindergarten.

A 34-1 vote from senators Wednesday sent the measure by Baton Rouge Democratic Sen. Cleo Fields to the House for consideration. Louisiana children currently must attend school from the ages of 7 to 18, unless they graduate early from high school.

Fields’ proposal would require children who turn 5 years old by Sept. 30 of each year to attend kindergarten, starting with the 2022-23 school year. Similar proposals have failed to win legislative passage in prior years Getting them baws started early

I’ve never met a 6 year old who wasn’t in school. Only 5 year olds that didn’t start on time were kids who’s birthdays were late and their dad was afraid they might be arse at sports in 10 years because of it.

It's a miracle I am successful despite Louisiana public and private education.

My brother held his kid back bc he was so small. Now the kid is just the oldest and smallest in his class.

My son attended kindergarten twice, and he’s no smarter for it, I don’t see the point.

I had no idea kids were allowed to not attend kindergarten in the first place.

It'll all be worth it when he's the biggest kid on his 4th grade football team

Stupid to pass a law about it when 97% of kids go to kindergarten in the first place

I knew someone who did this as well. Just stupid and they regretted it, as well as the children.

Tell that to all those north LA state champions.

There’s usually a big difference between a 19 year old and 17-18

My boy was born late August and started when he was 5. He would have still been 5 if we waited another school year. In hindsight we should have waited.
