So my old rolling suitcase died recently and I purchased what I thought was a properly sized bag. I measured it at home and it's actually 23" tall and the max is usually 22". I'm quite positive I"ve seen larger bags not get checked on every flight I've been on the past few years, but I come to the OT, experts in everything, for reassurance that it won't be a big deal OR to call me an idiot and remind me that rules are there for a reason.

if you get a power-tripping gate agent she will make you out it in that metal size checker…at worst you just gate check it right there

you will be fine 99% of the time

Sounds like a business opportunity. Sell those soft measuring tapes like tailors use for measuring shirt sleeves, pants legs, etc. but alter the spacing of the inches ever so slightly but enough so that 23” shows as 22”. They might argue that your bag doesn’t fit in their little cage/box thing but you’ve got a measuring tape to show the box was built wrong.

There might even be a market for a tape that makes 4” look like 8”.

No one questions a tape measure.

Smaller jets may make you gate check it. Larger ones you’ll be fine.

However if it becomes a problem, order a smaller one.

So it comes in centimeters instead of inches?
Clever!

Pack a handgun and they will forget all about that extra inch.

I would go to a small airport at a time that it is not busy and simply see if you can fit it in their little sizing gauge. Pay particular attention to what will happen when you overstuff it with clothes. If it won’t fit in the rack I wouldn’t keep it.

I travel most weeks and I've been using one of these for 15 years. Multiple continents and month-long stints. The attraction is that when you have to reroute or change flights last minute, you can jam it under virtually any seat in front of you, no gate check required. Also goes up steps and escalators, no wheels problems.

Not true. It's got to be huge for them to even check it.

Last trip I had, leaving Tampa, I saw it. It was quite the confrontation as well. The passenger looked like she was about to create a Worldstar video (she was an old white lady who was losing. her. shite.)

I don't know what the poors do with oversized bags, I can bring whatever size luggage I want on my jet.
