If you've spent any time on LSU's campus lately, you knew that it was bursting at the seams. Everything from parking, dorms, and classrooms are in short supply. That's why they have so many new buildings in the works.

But what shocked me with the below article was that BRCC now has a substantially higher enrollment than Southern University. BRCC wasn't even founded until 1995, and it now has nearly 10,000 students....while Southern (1880) has fewer than 8,000.

quote:

The Baton Rouge area’s college enrollment is at an all-time high, and local businesses must focus on keeping those students in town after they graduate to solve the region’s workforce needs, according to an economic report from the Baton Rouge Area Chamber.

In all, 58,641 students were enrolled across LSU, Southern University, Baton Rouge Community College, River Parishes Community College and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, according to BRAC’s 2023 Economic Outlook, released Tuesday. That figure is up from 55,025 in fall 2021 and 48,556 in fall 2018.

The bulk of those students — 37,354 of them — are at LSU. The university’s enrollment hovered around 30,000 to 31,000 from 2017 to 2019 before a burst to 34,290 in fall 2020.

Southern University’s population hit 7,846 this fall, up from 7,091 two years ago. BRCC has 9,684 enrollees this year, up from 7,742 last year.

Meanwhile, for the third straight year, workforce issues topped the list of potential impediments to growth, according to business leaders surveyed by BRAC. Some 30% of survey respondents listed workforce troubles as a top concern, followed by crime rates (19%) and traffic (8%).

BRAC officials said the report shows, “to no one’s surprise,” that workforce needs will be a top priority in 2023.

“The good news is that net migration is rapidly improving, and we continue to see an increase in Capital Region population growth and expect a steady increase through 2025,” BRAC President and CEO Adam Knapp said in a statement.

LSU needs to build a lot more of everything - including parking decks. They don't have enough space on campus to house the freshman. So the off campus apartment buildings are also chock full of students.

Not surprised that Southern University is floundering. That's their default state with the management that they have.

BRCC did a good job connecting with universities so when they leave BRCC they auto enroll into one of the schools they are partnered with. Not to mention, it’s cheaper.

FMOL has cornered most of the medical education, it’s just really expensive to go there.

So, no need for HBCUs? They were started for the children of slave owners anyway.

Texas A&M is even worse.

They've built or expanded at least a dozen academic buildings in the past few years. And they must have finished out 1,000+ dorms since then. But those usually come at the expense of parking spaces.

They build that one parking deck at Union Square at then shelved plans to build 3 more because it was ugly.

University enrollment is down across the board, but it's way up at the flagship public universities like LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, A&M, etc.

That's doubly true in Texas. A&M is now the largest college/university in the US. Even bigger than Ohio State.

They are nearly twice the size of LSU, which is insane. Even given their record of knocking anything older than 20 years down and rebuilding it/expanding it just for fun....their campus must be straining with all of that new enrollment.

I’ve had zero issues parking on campus the last 2 years. Pull into the parking garage and park on the first floor every time, no matter what time of day or which day of the week it is.

I'm surprised that incorporating parking into new construction hasn't been thought of...

My theory is universities intentionally make parking complicated/limited so they can rack up on tickets from students. The shite I saw at ULM over the parking was ridiculous. I had a buddy park off a side street (technically off campus) near his dorm because there was no parking at the dorm. Campus police wrote him a ticket. I think he might have gotten it overturned based on hte fact he wasnt on campus but still.

Another friend pulled into a spot that wasnt in "her zone" for her parking sticker for 2 seconds to drop off one of her buddies. She never left her car during this time and campus pd pulled in behind her and gave her a ticket.

I used to have to park on the edge of campus (south highland gate) almost every day in the late 90’s.

I also remember a tow truck with a “Killer Llama” sticker rolling around campus nonstop. Those guys were friends and it seems like that would have been bad for the brand.

Could this be an economy thing?

The state schools tend to be cheaper so it would make sense if they are seeing higher numbers while others don’t.

Also with brcc, if you want an even cheaper option you knock out classes there then finish at LSU.
