It wasnt until this moment that I realized how the Tujaques sign looks like a dick and balls.
Tujaques ADNM. Why the hell should the sign stay?

I'm not subscribing to NOLA to read the stupid article. Why was Tujagues not allowed to take the sign? Is it considered a historic component of the building or something else? That sucks.

That's my guess. The Preservation Resource Center has preservation easements on many of the older buildings in the city, especially in the Quarter. Plus, the Vieux Carre Commission is extra strict about modifying existing structures in any way, shape, or form.

“Cajun Bistro recipe for the the crawfish they caught in Arabi” sounds really stupid.

I would argue it's more historically connected to the restaurant itself and even THAT wasn't its original building. I certainly think it would lend more to "preservation" keeping the sign intact as is, simply allowed to move down the street with the restaurant to its new location than with this ridiculous alternative.

You can get around the paywall by clicking print on the article and reading the print preview screen. Ipad/Iphone reader view works as well.

It's his money and he can do what the frick he wants but I am hoping he at least knows the difference between Cajun and Creole.

He probably does and doesn't care since the Tourists want Cajun!

From article:
quote:

Still, those who can’t imagine Decatur without
Tujague's in neon above it shouldn’t fear: the
Vieux Carre Commission on Wednesday gave
preliminary approval to an exact replica at the
restaurant’s new location a few blocks away.

Also:
quote:

Holmes, with VCPORA, has backed the proposal
for a replica. But she also said that since the
rules won’t let the sign at the old location be
changed, the best possible outcome would be
simply to move the historic sign.
Historic preservation rules allow the sign to
stay up only if it is not altered in any way,
according to the minutes of a Vieux Carre
Commission meeting on the issue. At that same
meeting, Latter told commissioners that the
new owners of the building are legally required
to take down Tujague’s name.
“Since there is no use for the existing sign we
would encourage an agreement between those
two entities so that this architectural
component can be retained at the new
location,” Holmes said.

So I bet a little $$$ changing hands will get the T-shirt Czar to allow the sign to be moved to new location. SOunds like VCC supports that solution too.
