Lexus is developing a manual transmission for electric cars

Toyota is developing a manual transmission that it hopes to use in future electric cars, with the intention of making EVs more engaging to drive. The project’s under the remit of Lexus, who will take a leading role in the development of all Toyota’s high performance electric cars moving forward. The pairing of a manual transmission with an electric powertrain might seem counterintuitive, but Lexus insists the scope of the technology goes beyond just the action of changing gear, forming a centrepoint of augmenting an entire combustion-powered driving experience in a low-carbon EV.
Rather than physically fitting a mechanical manual transmission to the back-end of an electric motor, this technology uses an unconnected gear stick and clutch pedal that use haptic drivers to generate ‘feel’. This is then combined with clever software and sound generators within the cabin to create a complete experience. Both elements are physically connected to, well nothing, but utilise technology already available on today’s cars to create virtual feedback.
The virtual clutch pedal is something that’s already been introduced in a couple of models that feature clutch-by-wire systems. At the moment, they sit at bookends of the car market, with Hyundai using the technology on its i20 supermini (although not the i20 N) and Koenigsegg using its own system on the complex multi-clutch transmission it debuted on the CC850 supercar. This system recreates the feel of a mechanically-linked clutch pedal through a haptic driver in the pedal itself, much like motors attached to contemporary electric steering systems. We’ve already had a go with the virtual clutch pedal in Hyundai’s i20, and aside from not jolting forward when you aggressively drop the clutch, you’d never know there was no physical connection.

I thought one of the biggest draws of electric cars was self-driving. Who wants this?

Seems like they are going after a demographic that doesn't exist.

Why would you shift a motor that doesn’t need shifting? This is odd

Fake clutches, what will Teebow do?

I am guessing there is a contingent of people out there that truly love to drive. They love cars that are fun to drive..and MANY of those people are wealthy, have influence, and write for car media.
I am also guessing that if they can convince those types of people that EVs can offer the same type of experience then it would tear down another wall keeping a full conversion to electric. But I am truly just spitballing why they would invest money into this.

One of the main draws of EV is not needing a multi-speed transmission because the motor can give you as much torque as you need at any RPM so long as you have adequate current going through the windings. I agree with the poster saying this seems like it is going after a demographic that doesn’t exist, and giving the illusion of a more complicated drivetrain for no reason

Not sure why you thought that. It just happens that EVs are at the cutting edge of vehicle technology. Plenty of ice cars have things like adaptive cruise control, lane assist etc..
Back to the original topic, this is pretty stupid. Might as well make it fake, so that way when it breaks it doesn't affect anything else.
The simplicity of electric vehicles is it greatest asset. I guess so manufacturers might be worried about the lucrative service centers dying off

Can you stall it if you release the clutch too fast?

After reading it, it sounds like there's no actual transmission. Just a fake pedal and sound generators to make you feel like you're shifting.
Just like pumping fake exhaust sounds through your speakers.
One of the big benefits of EVs are reduced number of moving parts. Nobody wants to add an actual transmission where it doesn't belong.

what's next, spraying fake exhaust?

Electric vehicle drivers feel most comfortable when their hand is on a stick

Um….
You shift the transmission, not the motor. Or do EV’s not have transmissions?

That contingent is TINY and they aren’t buying toyota or lexus evs.
This reality makes zero sense.
It’s amazing how behind and dumb the japanese companies have handled the EV transition era.

Sounds like exactly what they did.

Drove my friend's Tesla, and I was like, this is the world's fastest golf cart. It has no soul.

Sounds like a bunch of stuff that can break.
