I’ve gone to CVS my entire life for prescriptions. It’s always been what’s most convenient.

New insurance doesn’t accept CVS. Walgreens is an option but I’ve also discovered a local pharmacy. I’d rather shift my business to the local pharmacy but are they going to be more expensive? Are they less likely to have certain medication or genetics? Or are the rates and availability of these drugs part of the negotiation with the insurance provider and it’d be about the same anywhere?

ETA: I can’t just walk in the store and check prices. I suppose I could call and ask a bunch of different drugs and their prices and compare but that seems like it may not be very efficient.

I went to 4 different Walgreens last week for my Adderall, all out!

Ridiculous, and they wonder why I try to get my benzos filled a day early every month. You guys stress me out!

I used to use a local pharmacy and never ran into a problem with them not having a drug.

I now use the Publix one where I do my grocery shopping just out of convenience.

You should call your insurance first and find out if the independent vs Wag or other chains prices would be different or the same

As far as your meds go, pretty much they all stock the normal ones people use everyday...

If it’s something new , they probably won’t carry it but can order it for you.. same deal as with a chain . We don’t carry every single hot new drug that just comes out

I hate walgreens so much. Don't go there. Their service is so shitty.

The local pharmacies are typically VERY competitive with prices. PLUSSSS with insurance it shouldn't matter. If they don't have the drug you need they will get in for you in 24 hours (specialty drugs)

I have a high deductible insurance so price matters to me. Unless you’re saying insurance will have negotiated similar rates with many different pharmacies.

I know a guy. He works out of the trunk of a 1998 Lincoln Continental, but he is mobile, usually, and will come to you.

I haven't been to a Walgreens/CVS type of place for medicine in at last five years.
So much better service at the small local places and I didn't notice a difference in prices at all.

Even if you have a high deductible, insurance will still have a negotiated amount they can bill you toward that deductible.

And our experience with local vs Walgreens or CVS has been infinitely better and less stressful.

If you have a HDHP, it matters. Prices are all over the place. And usually Walgreen's and CVS are the highest by a lot under my plan. There are also times when GoodRx is cheaper than insurance.

Again.. all of this info your insurance company will be able to provide... the actual pharmacies will have no idea unless you turn your scrips in and they run them. And tell you the prices they get sent back from the insurance company

I use Dutchtown Pharmacy, and unlike CVS or Walgreen's - I can walk into there right now and drop off a prescription and wait for about five minutes for it. The pharmacist is helpful and super nice, and all of the workers there are as well. The prices are not more expensive there.

I made the change to local pharmacy about ten years ago, and never looked back. The hours are a tad bit more limited, but you just make accommodations for that - no big deal.

Also ask the pharmacy what the cash price is because sometimes it's not worth the $10 copay for $6 worth of meds.
