I used some oil on a new outdoor table that we got to weatherproof the wood then used paper towels to wipe up the excess and threw it in the trash. Never read the warning label on the plastic container with the oil in it. Why would I? I've got a bunch of shite in the garage that's combustible but contained. We went out to get ice cream and about a half hour after we get back and my wife said something in the kitchen smells like it's burning. The dishwasher had been running earlier and I thought something plastic had fallen on the heating element. Checked it out but couldn't see anything. Looked to my right where the trash is and see smoke coming from the drawer (it rolls in under the counter). Pulled it out and the paper towels were charred and they were smoldering in the trash. My wife looked it up and it said that linseed oil can spontaneously combust in 2-3 hours if used with organic cloth. You're supposed to wash it with detergent after using them, fully wet them down then dry before disposing or put them in a metal container. frick!!!!!!

I always thought it was common knowledge about chemical soaked towels away from combustible stuff.

Apparently not for me. I understand about keeping these away from a fire source but didn't expect that shite to go up on it's own.

Also tossing a organic cloth covered in linseed oil in a garbage can seems like a good way to burn a building down undetected

Since your dick is organic what would happen if you covered it in linseed oil?

Seen this at a machine shop. Several oily/greasy shop rags sitting on the concrete smoldering.

At my home shop, all oily shop tags go in an airtight metal container.
