Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s travel has cost New Orleans taxpayers more than $250,000 since the start of 2023, a stretch of time in which the mayor has spent more than one in five days outside of the city, according to expense records and official schedules.

The expenses for more than 20 trips in the U.S. and overseas include hotel rooms, flights, car services, food and drink and other incidentals for Cantrell and the staffers that accompany her, including New Orleans police officers who serve as the mayor’s bodyguards.

Outside groups sponsoring Cantrell's attendance at conferences have pitched in another $100,000 for expenses. The mayor’s travel costs are often partially or completely covered by sponsors, but those of her entourage generally aren’t.

quote:

The $250,000 in expenses billed to city taxpayers were tallied by The Times-Picayune using documents obtained through public records requests. They were paid out of the city’s general fund. The cost of her trips, which have drawn scrutiny for their frequency, hasn’t before been made public.

City Ordinance should have managed this issue decades ago. These outcomes fall at the feet of the current and many previous iterations of the City Council.

Does she do anything good for the city? Or is her job just an all expenses paid vacation to some pretty nice places? Just asking.

It's just further proof that being mayor of New Orleans is by far the best job in the world. Don't have to do shite, don't have to be good at anything, can be dumb as frick, and not spend anything, and can have a full term full of amazing vacations paid by the normal, hard working tax payers.

My hatred for that mother fricking bitch is infinite.

I've said that Moreno is probably a front runner and that she is complicit in this. She did enough for a sound bite but I don't trust her

The same ones that don't pay taxes are the ones that are voting for her because taxes don't effect them. Housing paid for. Food paid for. Ect.ect....

Plenty of comments on these articles in the past that support this. Blacks vote lock step for democrats and it hurts them in the long run. I don't believe any party should have control for a long period of time. In this case, they have had control since Reconstruction. When they know you will vote for them no matter what they do not have motivation to actually do anything for you. The cherry on top is the "bushel of crabs" mentality that exists in the black community. Sprinkle in extremely liberal white folks moving to town that do not understand what is actually going on and you're very, very stuck

Not shocked
Previous mayors likely did same thing without scrutiny
The fact that it still goes on with all the media coverage makes it even more criminal
The city council still approves the budget for this so they are just as complicit

It’s amusing and infuriating how these ‘people’ vote for property tax increases then freak out when their rent goes up because they don’t understand why.

It’s been a vicious cycle for decades here and other Democratic-run urban jungles.
