Not really. Especially if you consider the extra shite teachers do like coaching sports, cheerleader sponsor, etc. That's a lot of extra hours.

California teachers make way more than LA teachers. Obviously cost of living is higher, but still.

And teachers who are also football coaches...way harder than any plant job. You essentially go 6:30am-6pm then if there is a freshman, JC, varsity game add it til 10. Then you have to grade papers...and no, you don't get OT. You get a stipend of like 2k. 9 months of extra work for 2k

True but not all teachers even do that, those that do get a little extra incentive in their paycheck (and I mean little)

Still the amount of hours my friend is at work vs my time at work and home doing things for work, I prefer my time. I wouldn't mind his paycheck ( ) but not at those hours.

Got an email from my kids' school this week that they would be open 8am until 11:30am M-Th and unavailable in the afternoon because they would be "busy getting the school and their lesson plans ready for next school year"

Teachers don't get paid for summer. They are on contracts for however long the school year is. They may have their checks split over 12 months so they continue to get a check during the summer, but they aren't being paid for their time off.

So they get paid for the summer.

Don't have my summer break until next friday can't wait.

I'm always amazed how many people just shite on the teaching profession because you make more money. Good for you man, i've been poor my whole life i'm cool with the $40K I started out with.

some places a new teacher starts out at 43k

Where in Louisiana? That's close to the max out here. Sister in law started teaching last year for a whopping 28k. I have a lot of friends that coach. I thought about going back to school to do the same. No way I could take a 50k paycut, even for summers off.

Teachers in my district start at 51k, then you make 3k for being an assistant coach, plus extra for private lessons and club teams, plus working over the summer.

You can do pretty well as a teacher

My wife has been a teacher for 29 years, and has never had more than 7 weeks off, so if you guys in LA get 10, rejoice for sure.

Tomorrow is my wife's last day anyway, she is retiring. Lots more vacation time for her.

That's how you do it.

If I was a teacher, I would probably still do the "take summer off" thing once every 5 years or so.

Insert joke about you having awful English teachers and lacking reading comprehension here.

No. Teachers do not get paid for summer. They get paid for the number of school days in a school calendar. In Tuscaloosa County, it's around 185. Teachers are allowed to take their salary for working those 185 days and split it into 12 separate checks, so they still receive a check during the summer months for easier budgeting and financial management.

Teachers don't get paid for summers, weekends, or Holidays.

In my district a new teacher starts at $40,000 for a 182 day contract. That's about $219.00 per day. An average school day is 7 hours but for the sake of argument we'll figure 10 hours per day to account for planning, grading etc. So on average a first year teacher makes about $21.90 per hour on average.

The main argument for being underpaid is that the salary scale advances very slowly so ten years in they are only making about $45,000 per year. Our district implemented some merit pay incentives so years of service increases are tiny and performance incentives make up the biggest portion of pay increases. However, the scale still increases very slowly. Advanced degrees increase salary significantly in my district but that is a local decision and not all districts reward continuing education.

I have about 15 years in and I am a school principal. I work 230 days and my salary is near $80,000. I'll take the lower pay and much improved life any day. I worked as an operator for ten years and made excellent money but I like my life now. For the record, I never felt underpaid for the amount of hours I had to put in.
