One man drowned and another was rescued over the weekend after high winds caused a boat to sink in Toledo Bend Lake.
According to Sabine Parish Sheriff Aaron Mitchell, high waves overtook a boat Saturday afternoon in the the south end of the lake.
Mitchell said two men from Lake Charles, both in their 50s, were headed to the Pirates Cove area when the incident occurred.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department located one man holding on to a stump. The other man had drowned, they said.
Deputies said both men were wearing personal flotation devices.
The survivor was air-lifted to a Shreveport hospital and treated for hypothermia. The other man was taken to Shreveport for an autopsy.
RIP
My brother, dad, and I once got caught in a sudden storm on Toledo with high winds and I was scared the swells were going to drop us right onto a stump. I could hear the prop coming out of the water with each wave drop. It was scary but we were able to pull into a cove where trees blocked the wind and wait it out.
Wonder what size boat these guys were in.

Yea when the wind is kicking the swells can get really scary on TB. Enough so that I could see how a PFD wouldn't be very much help but the one that survived is being treated for hypothermia so it might not have been an actual drowning even though that is what they are saying as of now.

Not sure how this happens unless he had a heart attack or hypothermia. The water should be mid 60s right now.

or hypothermia.
Yea I read on Facebook that the survivor is being treated for hypothermia.

Yeah, the hypothermia got him, I'm sure.
I was fishing a tournament once and stupidly forgot my rain gear at home. The temps were right around 70 degrees. A nice day. The rain came in a steady drizzle that afternoon, and by the time we got back to the dock, I was close to hypothermic.

No shite.
They were on the South end trying to cross from Texas back to Pirates Cove. I feel bad for their families, but that was a horrible decision.

You can become hypothermic in water as warm as 80* IIRC

names released yet?
I thought standard reporting practice was names were withheld if minors, but not adults.
Prayers to the families.

Not that I have seen. I think they usually don't release the names before notifying the family of the deceased.

Toledo Bend can look like the Gulf during bad storms. It’s not a place to play around with.

And when you get out of the boat lanes the stumps and treetops are just waiting to mess your boat up.

Only after Spouse, family, or next of kin have been notified

Could have been trapped under the boat or tangled in underwater branches.

Mid to upper 50's right now.
Literally every basshole that owns a boat from Lake Charles to Shreveport is waiting for it to hit 58 degrees.

Really? Seems late.

Yeah it’s def colder than mid 60’s. Probably still a week or two more with the cold weather coming in this week.
