Lafayette to remove Mouton statue from center of Downtown

I can't believe there wasn't already a thread on this.
Anyone know why they caved? They just seem to have given in all of a sudden.
I'd have no problem with "racist statues" being removed, but this is like with Beauregard. They have no idea who he was (half black, PGT that is) and no idea what his life was about (PGT fought for black suffrage and education). They just see the confederate uniform and emote.

The Alfred Mouton statue may soon be removed from its place in downtown Lafayette.
On Friday morning, The United Daughters of the Confederacy and the City of Lafayette reached a settlement on the removal of the General Alfred Mouton Statue.
According to court records, the settlement will give the city of Lafayette the ability to remove the General Mouton statue from its poisition on 735 Jefferson Street to another location. That location will be determined by the United Daughters of the Confederacy Alfred Mouton Chapter.

I don’t agree with removing statues but I think it was damaged recently anyway.

Can we remove Democrats for all their racism over the last 180 years?

They should put it it near the welcome center across from the Walmart on evangeline.

Beauregard was the third child of Hélène Judith de Reggio, of mixed French and Italian ancestry and descendant of Francesco M. de Reggio, member of an Italian noble family whose family had migrated first to France and then to Louisiana, and her husband, Jacques Toutant-Beauregard, of French and Welsh ancestry.[2] He had three brothers and three sisters. His family was Roman Catholic.[3]
Did you just completely make up the PGT is black thing? But he definitely did become an advocate for black rights and suffrage

Mouton might have been a good man who had exceptional non-slavery related accomplishments, which is a strong case for letting his monument stand. The fact that it was erected in Jim Crow era Lafayette sure makes it look like a thumb in the eye of black people.
My issue with this is, I want to be sensitive to the blacks of the era, but the rest of his good works suddenly get lost, really?. Like so many other leaders of their time whose statues had to be removed. Slavery is never justified. But how do we speak to what was standard practice at that time, as terrible as it was, but has been abolished for a very long time now. We must, as a multi-cultural people acknowledge the sins of our past, and we must move on.
There is a rich and complex history in our western civilization that should not be dismissed solely by the element of "slavery."
Slavery should be exposed for what it is, a crime against humanity. Slavery continues to exist in other countries, sadly. Ours is the country that really addressed the issue head-on, in it's inception, and later aided by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Kneeling for our flag represents a moral and/or educational laziness. If things were so bad here, people would leave........but no....they immigrate here in droves, risking life and limb.
Sorry blue, I got on a little soap box here in your thread.
