For one of the most Catholic cities in the state, this seems like a harsh position from the mayor. It seems as if Lafayette fancies itself as the land of milk n honey, where superficialness and pretentiousness are more important than actually caring about down and out people. It is not as if you see them on every street corner.

Here is a solution for you since you are so caring for these people. Why don't you raise money and buy them bus tickets to Houston so they can flourish in another society which is free from the superficialness and pretentiousness of Louisiana.

Don’t let them fool you. They are not down and out, homeless or on hard times. They are all addicts and junkies. When you give them money it’s going to be smoked, shot, snorted or drank. Do not enable them as they will never quit begging

I think it has more to do with the drug dealing ring they uncovered. Dealers were posing as panhandlers.

The only time I ever gave money to a panhandler downtown (was drinking on the Marley's patio), I asked what he was going to buy with it. He said a cheeseburger from McDonalds. I asked him to bring me one back, and he never did. Kinda fricked up IMO.
