Retail chain Kroger closed two California stores Saturday after Long Beach City approved a coronavirus "hero pay" ordinance.

Hero pay ordinances bump pay for workers in retail stores and pharmacies with 300 or more workers due to the hazards of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Long Beach, eligible workers have seen a $4 per hour increase in their wages.

Democratic Mayor Robert Garcia approved the ordinance in January. Other cities in California have taken similar measures, with Los Angeles approving "hero pay" in March at $5 an hour.

In response, Kroger started to close stores in cities where "hero pay" ordinances exist. The retail chain first announced intentions to close two Long Beach locations in February, stirring protests from workers and union members.

quote:

Garcia countered by citing a report by The Brooking Institute that noted Kroger had doubled its profits and spent "nearly a billion dollars in 2020 to buy back its own stock shares."

The mayor has threatened to sue Kroger over the Long Beach closures, though it's not clear on what grounds he would do so.

“How dare you close a business that you own. I’m suing!!”

Hero pay is a very cringy thing to call it.

However, I have no problems with the workers wanting to be paid more. Kroger has had an increase in sales with COVID and the CEO has had a salary increase as well.

Bag boys and cashiers are more of a hero than many of those tic tok nurses.

Commies always try to promote the low wage worker as the backbone of the unit.

Hilarious how the Kroger CEO gets an increase in pay (already making millions to begin with) during COVID and no one gives a shite. Yet workers who are making minimum wage want a few more dollars an hour and the OT makes fun of them.

Such a lack of empathy.

When their sales decline do they get pay cuts? Kroger is a publicly traded company. How about we tie the cashier's pay to the stock price or something like that?

Typical low IQ response. I'm not a commie for being sympathetic to low-wage workers.

And yes, if every single Kroger employee stoped working they'd have no business.

"The mandate will add an additional $20 million in operating costs over the next 120 days, making it financially unsustainable to continue operating the three underperforming locations," Kroger said in a statement.

So, now they lost their jobs because a mayor drove the nail all the way in. Guess what, money doesn't grow on trees.

Just about anytime the government gets involved to try to improve a situation they make it worse.

The workers should get a CEO gig or start their own grocery business then.

The low end workers would rather be on unemployment right now.

Their labor is not as valuable as they believe it is. If so, they could simply find someone else to pay them that wage.

The CEO's salary or profits have zero to do with the value of one's labor.
