Before this summer, my bill was $200-250 a month for the summer. It was $560 last month.
We took a window unit and put it in the living room, where the thermostat is located. We run it from about 1pm to 8pm. We set the central unit to 76 deg.
It fricking sucks that I’m celebrating a $410 electric bill.

Did you get it at an estate sale for $8?

I was thinking he replaced finally he upgraded his antiquated central unit for something more efficient.

Seriously tho that's awesome. If windows weren't so fricking expensive I'd replace all of mine and prolly save some dollars.

For an AC unit, that is correct. The price goes up another $600 if you have an AC/heater unit. Got to think ahead. Winter is coming.

I’d rather pay $500 a month than have a window unit on my house

Maybe get rid of all that shite you got laying around and your house would cool better.

We have a portable A/C in our den because the windows face Northwest, so the sun sets through the windows above the TV every day. We tinted them and I don’t think it made a difference. Our A/C runs from about 2pm-midnight or 1 am. I think it’s dying, but I can’t replace it this summer. Trying to hold out 1 more year

My wife is menopausal, and has heat flashes, I put my hurricane power outage window unit in our bedroom, and it’s awesome. I get our bedroom down in the 60’s at night, and she appreciates it…

I was talking to my SIL a few days ago and the electric bill came up... She lives in Tennessee in a brand new rural subdivision (new construction). The house is all electric. She is pretty tight with her "lectric" bill. She keeps her AC at 76 during the day and lowers it for the night. So she is running it 24/7... Her freaking bill was $60.00. How can that be? I asked her to repeat the amount a few times.. Are we just getting screwed/cheated/ripped off by Entergy?

It is worth living with a window unit running in your living room to save $5 per day????

Recently had a unit (2 ton) replaced.

I thought I was being smart 3 yrs ago when I chosee not to replace it along with the main unit (4 ton) at that time. I squeezed 3 more years, higher electric bills, etc. Thankfully no repairs were needed on the old unit during that time period. However, the replacement (2 ton) cost more than the 4 ton did 3yrs ago. The AC guy said that equipment for next year will increase by 3% to 5%.

Good luck.

For dirt cheap builder grade, single hung, non-energy efficient that you are going to install yourself, sure.

Lots of Tennessee Valley Authority cheap hydroelectric power up there.

If we can only find a way to harness the power of one of the largest rivers in world that flows right through Louisiana we can have cheap hydroelectric power too. Instead we depend on fossil fuels and a few nuclear plants that work only sometimes.

You can even couple a hydroelectric plant with a coastal restoration project to let water and sediments to flow into few of the basins that are starved for fresh water.

Also elevation and shade can help. If she resides on the East side of a mountain or large hill, she would be on the shade side for the afternoon. If there are lots of trees around her that helps too. Before, Ida I had a large oak on the Southside of my house and that really helped keep the house cool, but it was just too big, and it fell on the house. Luckily, it only clipped part of the house and the damage was relatively light.

Sun sets the same way at my house and I had automated sun shades put in.

Really makes my back porch flexible to be part of my living room or pool area depending on time of the year.
