Judge rules hippos are people

Judge Karen Litkovitz recognized the hippos as legal persons with respect to that statute.
Ive got so many questions, but my main 3 are:
1- WTF??
2- Why is a US Judge ruling on Colombian narco Hippos?
3- Is the US just trolling Colombia?
Any legal explanation from an OT lawyer- would be appreciated.

Not the first time an imported species from a foreign place has been extremely detrimental to its new environment, especially when they are protected.
Once they get past a certain breeding population it’s hard to quell their numbers effectively.

The hippos need to be exterminated but but but people think they are cute. Won’t be cute when they completely destroy the ecosystems of the Amazon river basin.
Also side note, there was a plan to bring hippos to Louisiana in the early 1900s. What a shitshow that would be

I am pretty certain the classic, dearly departed T. Pittari's Restaurant used to serve hippo when they could get it.
