This is WILD. Jody was a pretty impressive guy back in the day. Jacktown got him bad.

Councilman Stokes described these recent indictments as hurtful and a problem, not just for those being charged, but for the entire city.
He took time in a statement to encourage those charged to think about their families and possibly take a plea deal to receive less jail time, even though Mayor Chowke Antar Lumumba, District Attorney Jody Owens, and Councilman Aaron Banks have maintained their innocence.
Councilman Stokes believes this just adds to the lack of trust in the city’s leadership and sends a message to those in these roles. “You drinking dirty water. You can’t get your streets paved. You already lost trust. You know, what we try to do is build trust, and what these indictments will do is send a message that, you know, do not say you’re running for office to help people and you’re trying to help yourself. If you’re going to help people, help people,” Councilman Stokes said.

A federal judge has delayed sentencing until further notice for former Jackson City Councilwoman Angelique Lee. Lee resigned and pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges in August. Her sentencing was originally set for Nov. 13 in U.S. District Court in Jackson.

Lumumba could run again and Jackson would re-elect him
By a landslide.

I really wish Jackson wasn’t so broken. It’s a cool town otherwise and an easy day or weekend visit with plenty to do and a great music/bar/dining scene. The old downtown area is great, there’s a fantastic amphitheater nearby that gets legitimate touring bands, there’s outdoor shite to do, etc. and it’s two hours away
such a failure
Tell me you know nothing about Jxn without telling me you know nothing about Jxn.
Almost all of this "great music/bar/dining" is outside the city limits.
The old downtown area is great - it's a regular downtown almost completely deserted (it was deserted even before the pandemic).
Amphitheater - in Brandon
"There’s outdoor shite to do," there's a muddy, shallow reservoir that has much less boat traffic than one would think due to it's location and ease of access and a couple of mediocre golf courses.

When the two targeted white city council people were interviewed after Angelique Lee was arrested, they both stated that it was obvious this was a sting. The FBI had proportioned them too.

Oh, you know about the cow-tipping?
Is that what it’s called when you use cattle as drug mules? If so then yeah.

'Nothing has changed': What Lumumba said about running for a third term following indictment

quote:
Before news of his indictment was revealed, Lumumba announced multiple times that he would be running for a third term. Further, Lumumba declined to answer questions about his failure to file annual campaign finance reports for the last three years. "That is associated with this case, so I will not speak to it," Lumumba said on Monday. The mayor spoke on the topic briefly during an Oct. 21 press conference, saying his failure to file finance reports is "not uncustomary for my campaign."

exciting town as a young professional out of college. We had lively bars and restaurants and events all the time.
Good lord I spent some money in Martin's and George Street in my day

LMAO you're not supposed to admit that. Just say, "I was approached about this scheme, found it repugnant, and immediately ended the conversation."

I remember being excited about the future of Jackson MS when I was a young professional there. (1995 to 2001).
If you had told me, I honestly wouldn't have believed you. You can't make this shite up. I dare you to even try.

We used to go to Jackson a lot 25 or 30 years ago for shopping and dining and we also bought a lot of cars there…used to love going up there. Haven’t been in probably a decade but the last time I was there I realized I wouldn’t be in a rush to go back.

Martin's is still going strong and opened a location in Gluckstadt. George Street has opened and closed many times over the past 30 years, but it is currently open. It usually doesn't stay open long.
