Their margins must be insane to support a business where people only buy your product every five to seven years.

I bought a king size mattress from them a couple of years ago from the one in Algiers. Free delivery, no sales tax, and free mattress cover. I don't remember what we paid, but it was cheaper than the queen mattress we had before that. 4 years later and we still have it and it is in great condition

I did. They gave me the wrong matress. 10 kilos of heroin were stuffed inside.

Mattress shopping is worse than used car shopping.

You're lucky. I was only given 5.

There was a thread on this when the story broke. I never paid attention to the stores before, but now I look inside every time i drive past one. It's true. I've never seen anyone in there except for a salesman sitting at his desk.

and the fact they have to warehouse and deliver these huge things. Yes margins on mattresses are extreme.
And yes to the op a lot of mattress franchises are used to launder cash

I just read an article about mattress stores. Mattresses have one of the highest markups of any consumer product: around 80-85%. They barely have to sell any mattresses to run a profit.

I've wondered about this, too... and I doubt most people even replace mattresses the "recommended" 5 to 7 years ...more like 10 to 20 years in most cases I know of. But I agree that times I've shopped mattress only stores, I can't help but notice I'm usually the only customer, don't see how the could make money, and that something just seems to be strange about the whole business model in general.

Selling mattresses has always been a little bit of a slimy business but they are a legitimate business. I think they had a recent scandal involving some collusion on the real estate end of their business? But, that's separate from their mattress deals.

Wow, not going to ask how you know this but mark up would have to be astronomical to keep the business afloat considering the almost non-existent foot traffic plus the microscopic turnover rate compared to the vast majority of retail products.

Im very close to someone who works for Mattress Firm. The past few months have been shitty so maybe they are looking to cut some deals to get sales. The store managers have a lot wiggle room when it comes to pricing and their main goal is not let you walk so negotiate. The beds we bought are very comfortable.
From what I've been told they are actually a decent company to work for as far as how they treat their employees.

So not only are they taking several thousand off my cost, but they offer 0% financing for 5 years and I’d pay $40/month if I wanted.
Subtle brag that you can afford a bed?

They can right now. The manufacturer limits their ability on that line but I just asked and was told they are on sale now.
