Intelsat 33-E explodes in space from an “anomaly “

And, just to get tongues wagging, it was built by… *drumroll*… Boeing.
No danger of a chain-reaction of collisions … yet:

The U.S. Space Force is tracking debris in space after a satellite manufactured by Boeing exploded earlier this week, the satellite's operator said. The Intelsat 33e satellite, which was launched in 2016 and provides communications across Europe, Asia and Africa, experienced "an anomaly" on Saturday, Intelsat said in a news release. Attempts were made to work with Boeing and repair the satellite, but on Monday, the U.S. Space Force confirmed that the satellite had exploded.
No danger of a chain-reaction of collisions … yet:

Since the breakup, the U.S. Space Force is now tracking "around 20 associated pieces" of the satellite in space. The agency said that there are "no immediate threats" and routine assessments to ensure safety are ongoing. Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, said it had recorded "more than 80 fragments" of the destroyed satellite. Analysis of the pieces' trajectory determined that the destruction of the satellite was "instantaneous and high-energy," Roscosmos said.

Phew, just an interesting, non important space story.
Supported and up voted.

What exactly is on a satellite that would cause it to explode into lots of pieces??? There shouldn’t be any oxygen. The gas used to reposition satellites is inert pressurized gas, as I understand it. So, what the hell “exploded”???

Even space debris hates Boeing...

Lithium battery.

You listed one possible culprit a few words before. "Explosions" do not require combustion.

What do you put in a communications satellite that’s explosive?

you are right - but the High Energy portion of the explosion usually does

8 years after the fact? That may have been intentional.

Sooooo... design flaw, hit by fast-moving debris, shot down by another satellite or aliens?
I hope it's aliens.

I'm dumb so does this make sense?
In space would a BB that is going 98 whatever's (fragment of 33E) gets hit by something going 100 whatever's (usual orbit speed) be the same energy as that BB going 2 whatever's hits something stationary?
