In another time, push starting a std transmission car worked with a dead battery.

!956 chevy v eight. 4 barrel downdraft carb. std transmission. When the battery was dead, you could push start it easily in second gear with 2-3 friends
With fuel injection development, that option went away . Automatic transmission was not not push start friendly either

You can still do it to any manual.

how do the fuel pump and injectors work without battery power

Truth….I have push/pulled many cars in my life. It used to be a common occurrence.

It’s going to be hard to insure those after last weeks ruling.

I had a friend in college who played offensive tackle and he had a real shitbox 4 banger that the battery was perpetually dead. He could open the door put one leg down and get enough explosion off that one leg to push start it in reverse on flat ground. Then again as crappy as it ran it might have only had 40psi compression max in each cylinder.

Can't tell you how, can only tell you I have done it many times.

I can still do it with my current car.
Because you are spinning everything including the alternator.

I had an 84’ Mazda. That trick got me out of a jam often.

We had to push start my son’s standard transmission suv last week. The battery was fine, but the starter was bad. My son impressed his friends with that move. He even replaced the starter himself.

Hell yeah. I got by doing a one-man push start on my POS Nissan pickup truck when I was in college until I could save up the money to get it fixed.
I could one-man push start my 96 Integra GSR.

I push started a 2006 rav 4 it had fuel injection... no issues. Gave it to my son and he ran the wheels off it

Herculean effort on my part.
It was her car, left the radio on too long, Lucas Electrics will use any opportunity to fail.
She was first runner-up in a State Miss America pageant.

Unless you have a bad alternator, you realize a running motor is like a generator, right?

More like the starter draws way more amps than the fuel pump/injectors?

I had a 47 Chevy with a bad starter. I would always park on an incline so I could get it started by myself. I could actually start it in reverse as well as forward.

As long as your battery isn’t dead dead, it should have enough to run injectors and fuel pump. You would be surprised how far you can go. I had a shitty Taurus from the early 90s that the alt went out on on 10 in Hammond. Stopped to get gas and would crank. Cop jumped me off and I made it all the way to BR with everything possible shut off.
