Robert “Strange” McNamara who was the US Sec of Defense was Stanley Kubrik’s influence and inspiration for the film. The film my be satirical but it’s actually pretty damned accurate and McNamara was worried about a bad seed in the US military chain of command triggering an all out war.

Peter Sellers was also supposed to play MAJ Kong but he couldn't get the accent right so the part went to Slim Pickens.
