If you’re shopping for the holidays, start now

So, I will not tell you exactly what my job is, but my job heavily involves California ports. Probably one out of five calls involves someone bitching about California ports and Gavin Newsom. He’s the talk of the town with all my customers and they’re livid he wasn’t recalled. And here’s the thing: most of them don’t live in California.
Trust me: get on it now. Some of my customers have said they’re on backorder through (I shite you not) July of 2022. Before the pandemic it was two months tops and that’s when they were killing it. And it’s all due to how California ports operate and they can’t properly staff the ports. One of my customers said how he went on the beach of Long Beach with binoculars, saw a carrier out on the horizon, and knew his product was on there but had no idea when that boat would come to port since they’re simply supplying the crews through speedboats. It’s getting crazy bad.

A backlog of cargo ships waiting to get into the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are helping drive up the cost of goods and services during the pandemic. A record 70 cargo ships — carrying everything from furniture and electronics to toys — are facing delays at the ports, which handle 40% of the nation's imports.
The backlog is likely to inject more chaos into the holiday shopping season.
Shipping traffic is up 50% from pre-pandemic levels, Port of Los Angeles director Gene Seroka said. "The American consumer's buying strength is so strong and epic that we can't absorb all this cargo into the domestic supply chain," Seroka said. "That means you're not going to find the product you want as quickly as normal. If you're shopping for the holidays, start now."
A shortage of trucks and drivers to transport the goods from the ports is adding to the concern that some store shelves may be empty during the holiday shopping season.
"There are really on average about 16 available truckload shipments for every available truck to move product out of there," said Bob Biesterfield, the CEO of shipping logistics company C.H. Robinson.
He said major retailers are paying for planes to fly in goods from overseas and some are chartering entire container ships.
"That's something that, frankly, we've just never seen before," Biesterfield said. "We expect there will be more bare shelves for the holiday season this year than people may be accustomed to."

Maybe they should try a different port

My overseas shipments have gone from 6-8 weeks to 12-14 weeks, if I’m lucky.
Result is bigger orders for stock to fight the lead time, which everyone is doing…. Generating more traffic
And it’s all caused by bureaucratic bullshite

I imagine US cargo ships headed to China are experiencing the same chaos.
Just kidding. We don't ship shite to China.

Where? Have you seen how big California is? Portland isn’t a good port despite its name. Washington is hardly any better regulation wise than California is. Vancouver is being tyrannical with interstate travel. Mexican cartels can take the product if you port in Mexico and the border is a fricking disaster right now.
If you’re importing crap from Asia, this means you have to go through the Panama Canal and go to Texas. You know how much more time and fuel that takes? It’s not as simple as “choose another port” when your boat is this big and has a metric asston of cargo on it.
I guess they could go do this instead though:

They’re shipping it out and waiting for the ships to return. I can’t imagine they’re any more happy about this shite than we are and Xi Jinping has probably multiple times gotten pissed at Gavin Newsom… but then again Gavin is giving them another one of their exports nearly free of charge: tyranny and propaganda.

Yeah they’ve been warning this for a few months now so we actually bought all of the gifts for the kids we usually buy for a few days ago. They will be in tomorrow.

This is a good excuse to buy US produced goods versus foreign particularly Chinese goods. I understand this is difficult to impossible in some sectors including children's toys but saying no to foreign-sourced goods is a good mission in my mind.

You're complaining about Newsom but haven't said what his role is in all this...

If I buy anything for anyone for Xmas, I do it on Xmas eve at Walmart around 10pm when it’s empty
They always have stuff. And gift cards.

There are much higher profits in cheap chinese coke, though.

Social distancing, masking, and incentivizing people to stay at home. The managers at the ports are desperate right now since every business west of Texas is lighting into them nonstop.
EDIT: Garcetti is a major factor as well. Hear them bitching about him nonstop as well, and rightly so.

Guess we'll just have to make Christmas about Jesus this year.
We all make do.
