The Iberville Parish Council has approved a one-year moratorium on new development in part of its jurisdiction to address concerns about drainage following severe flash flooding in May.
Iberville Parish Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to halt the construction of high-density subdivisions within unincorporated areas east of the Mississippi River, news outlets report.
While developers say moratoriums stunt the growth of the parish and hurt jobs, the council says it needs time to assess these issues.
“Can you guarantee the people who buy your house that that water is going to stay out of there? I don’t think you can,” Matthew Jewell, chair of the Iberville Parish Council, told developers at the meeting.
The meeting featured tense exchanges between council members, residents and housing developers.

I understand flooding multiple times would be incredibly stressful and demoralizing but the insurance agent in me just wants to scream to people living in a damn swamp - or anywhere that’s very prone to flooding for that matter - “get the fricking flood insurance!”. Buy the coverage and that would take 99% of the financial stress away.

What about the stress of remodeling and relocating your family while the remodel takes place?

I drove down Bluff for the first time in a while today and that water ain't moving. Evaporation seems to be the only way its receding. The water doesn't look to be flowing at all at the Manchac bridge.

The moratorium needs to be in south Baton Rouge near Burbank and Siegen and U club etc.
All of the water that used to sit in Bayou fountain now has nowhere to go but except to flood Iberville.
Broome doesn’t care though. She just wants more tax money to waste.
Oh yeah, don’t forget to vote down the cats tax.

The Manchac needs to be dredged. The level by Alligator Bayou is 10 feet and the level by the Amite is about 3 feet. There must be some blockage downstream.
