My dad who was a historian and amateur archaeologists (and author on various subjects), insisted that I bring his 1860’s Springfield rifle to school around the year 1992. I was a private school kid in central MS, and things were certainly different back then. I obviously had by reservations, but my dad pressed the issue. He truly loves history…so I pull up to the school drop-off in our 1988/89 yellow dodge caravan (that smoked), stepped out of the car drop-off line holding a rifle considerably larger than myself and was met by a coach that taught hunters Ed. He examined the rifle, knew it was a percussion rifle, asked some questions and gave it back to me. I can’t remember if I brought it to class or had to keep it in the principal’s office, but I did get to do the show and tell part. Kids were crowded around the old rifle touching and asking questions…the answer I knew very few of…

Things were different then. I would be arrested today, even if it wasn’t my idea…but everyone got to touch and see a true piece of American history in a safe and monitored environment…a real piece of American history that they felt that day.

We had gunracks in the windows of trucks in the parking lot.

I brought one to hide outside of school in a culvert and picked it up when riding my bike home. School wasn't the danger in the early 90s, but to and from was.

A couple kids did a project on Remington at my school around 1998 and got permission to bring their rifles to school. No one seemed to be bothered at all.

One of the exemptions for the Gun Free School zones act is

quote:

(iv) by an individual for use in a program approved by a school in the school zone

Show and tell was a school program I say

Congrats on being dumb enough to think a 4th grader could successfully navigate the nine steps required to load and fire a 1860’s Springfield rifle.

Yeah, you could do that before the weekly school shootings we have now.

You are holding someone 31 years ago to the same standards of today and you dare accuse them of being the one with the low IQ?

Come on man. You know the rules, outrage without facts always trumps logic and reasoning.

Congrats on being so afraid of an inanimate object that you’re fearful of a piece of history. The gun was 130+ years old at the time.

In 9th grade they took to the football field to skeet shoot for our final test of hunters Ed. There’s no way I can see them doing that today. This was Avoyelles High 1997

In the 80's we lived in a rural area surrounded by swamp. many of the kids brought guns to school so they could go hunting and trapping as soon as they got out. Several kids paid their way to college on the money from trapping beaver and mink.

The universal truth is that animals in the wild don't die of old age surrounded by their little woodland friends, as they do in Disney movies, a predator gets them. In this case an 8th grader with a .22.

We taught riflery to middle school boys at a boys camp in Bay St. Louis well into the 90’s, and maybe later. They shot .22 shorts at metal stop targets in the old gym. The boys loved it.
