Blood samples get mislabeled in hospitals, not often but it happens.I saw it a few times in my career.Lab results that didn’t make sense would come back,Dr. would order repeat lab work and different results.
My dad had a crazy story about one of his neighbors,His lab work was abnormal, referred to oncologist who told him he had acute lymphocytic leukemia and only a few weeks to live without treatment.
He went straight to Houston, they repeated his lab work and it was normal.
I wondered what happened to the patient that actually had the leukemia,if it was caught in time.
Hospitals are scary places

The biggest swing and a miss in this thread.
I have a 4 and a 1 year old. Much different situations pre- and post-covid, but it definitely still exists, and is a god send for trying to get some damn sleep
My daughter was born in May 2020 and she never left the room. This was obviously right when Covid began so that could've been the reason why, they wouldn't even let me leave the damn room.

When my daughter was born, right after she started breathing and screaming, they put her ankle tag on her, me, and my wife. They would scan that tag constantly. Any procedure, check in, anytime she was moved in or out of the room.
Similar for my 2, and for everything Ochsner May get wrong I love the fact that the baby rarely leaves the room. And when they do, the mom comes with them, plus the tags

That happened to a friend of mine years ago. The little girl was two when he found out it wasn't his daughter.

what the hell happens when it's all straightened out? Do both families jsut throw up their hands and be like "well it's already been 5 years so this is fine". Do they attempt a swap? That'd be weird as hell
A swamp would be too much on a 5 year old; would destroy them. If it were me, I would hope I can be sane enough to have a conversation w the parents and we force a friendship so our kids can hang out that way we get to see our kids grow up without fricking with their heads. As they get older, ideally we’d come together as a family and let them know the truth and that both kids have 2 dads & 2 moms that love them unconditionally

There was a case many years ago where two baby girls were switched at birth. I saw an old TV movie about the story that reran at some point. I looked up the story and it was such a sad one.
The Mays and Twigg families both delivered baby girls at the same hospital. It wasn't until years later that the switch was discovered. In the meantime, Mrs Mays died of cancer when their only child (Kimberly) was very young. The Twiggs' daughter was Arlena or something like that. They found out she wasn't theirs during some blood tests. The child was about 9, I think, and had a congenital heart issue. She died after having surgery.
That's when the Twiggs sought to find their biological daughter and all havoc ensued. It was confirmed that Kimberley was the Twiggs' child. At some point, Kimberly went on visitations of some sort with the Twigg family. Then, when she was a teenager, she filed to "divorce" them.
Both families got a good bit of money. Don't know what happened to what Kimberly received, but a few years ago, she was 20/20 or some other show and said she'd been homeless and worked as a stripped. She had 6 children with 4 different men. Her life was mighty screwed up.
I don't know what the right answer is in this sort of situation which should be rare these days. Obviously, you love the child you raised even if not yours, but you would likely want a relationship of some sort with your bio child. In this situation, one child died which makes it all even worse!

I'd say you have an extended family for life. Sue the hospital for a enough for a piece of land with two homes on it, and both families move there? Swap wives occasionally or whatever, idk.

this story would be believable in the 70's and maybe the 80's.
no way is it believable in the 2000's.

That's the craziest shite! I can't even begin to understand how this must feel for all parties involved. So this means there is another family out there who raised a child that wasn't theirs.
I know mistakes happen, but something like this. I mean, what the hell do you do? A 5 year old kid. I think this would be one situation that I would feel completely lost and not know what to do.

I'm working on a NOLA area hospital renovation that has a new, decent sized nursery (20-25 bassinets), so it's definitely still a thing.
West Jeff ? They are getting theirs redone. We were just there in 2020 and a few months ago and stiell have a nursery. Had some friends and family use oschner baptist and they did everything in your room.
At west Jeff I followed our babies to the nurusy and watched through a window and they had the tags on them already. Our son kicked his off while in the room with us on day 2 and we didn't know the bands had alarms. They came running in there looking for it and making sure he was ours.

Sooooo why did the dad get the paternity test to begin with?
I imagine once the girl grew up to not look like either parent or anyone in their families, some thoughts creeped in.

this is such a non story. The 5 year old has now chosen to identify as her parents' biological child. Science be damn.

I can assure you it still exists at the biggest hospital in Atlanta and I went from "I would never send my new baby to sleep in there" to "please come get this rascal" in about 4 hours
us, too. hell, i wish we could send him to a nursery every night.
