Background: Wife was a good athlete as a kid; I was not. Our oldest is about to turn 7 in a few months.
He was asked to join a travel select team for soccer.
I think that is way too young to even consider. My wife is dead set on letting him do that.

So OT, I ask, how young is too young for travel teams?

My kid had 6 World Series rings by the time he was 6. I’d say don’t start him till he can walk at least though.

I think they have divisions for newborns now. It’s pricey but a great start for the babies.

A friend of mine who runs a travel team told me 'Just remember - somebody will ALWAYS be willing to take your money'.

6 months is definitely too young. 2 years old is too young as well.

Like the old adage says, it’s ever too early to begin investing.

That said, a proper name provides the solid foundation he’ll need no matter where in the travel sport world he traverses. Hopefully you’ve already gotten that part right.

Are there not enough 7 year old kids in your metro area to run around and play soccer that you need to spend every weekend traveling around the country?

Any travel sport = money pit
Buy him a computer and the kids that play travel ball today, will be working for your son tomorrow.
Cause “NEWS FLASH” travel ball DOES NOT equal a college scholarship.
Truth be told, it ain’t nothing more than a reason for mom and/or dad to get drunk every weekend.

Any age. Let him play rec league and high school soccer. I love my children and two of them are very good at soccer, but we're not traveling four hours to Savannah every other weekend so they can play.

Not sure where you live, but when it comes to travel sporta tennis is the best. You get to set your own schedule for practices and tournaments. If you have another kid no matter the sex you can all go to the same tournaments. You can also have the option to throttle it up or throttle it back. Also, it’s a lifetime sport. Can’t say the same about many other sports.

Once you join these travel teams for any sport they dictate your family’s schedule. When you get two kids going separate ways on the same that can be stressful and expensive. It to say tennis is very cheap, it about the same as travel ball.

Being on team sports is great for a number of reasons, that’s why our kids played team sports until they got to high school. We think our kids got the best of both worlds.
