His options were far far more limited than most people think and he didn't have much time to figure it out.

He probably never thought about putting his snowmobile into reverse and waiting a few minutes for the moose to mosey on.

I thought the same.

I'm sure there a few that posted in here have stated their first hand experience with Moosen and acknowledged he had no choice. Including snowmobile and snowmobile trails.

Here are some comments from an outdoor forum. A couple of people thought some people shouldn't have firearms because of the shoot, but most comments are as follows, and I've stated as well

quote:

We'll that was unnecessary Yeah don't turn that thing around and let the moose settle down or leave
Just shoot the fricking thing and keep going
Some people maybe shouldn't have firearms

He can't turn around and he can't go off trail. He did the right thing.

quote:

Turn around on a narrow trail, while you have an angry moose in front of you?

quote:

good shoot in my book. He even gave it a warning shot.

I do hope he went back and confirmed it was dead and salvaged the meat.

Turning around wasn't much of an option and the sled may not have had reverse. He showed restraint. His mistake was advancing toward the animal.

Roger (the person that seems most familiar with moose in this thread; as opposed to all the Louisiana boys who've never seen one in their life) has posted a response to that argument multiple times already. Some just don't want to acknowledge.

Not all have reverse.

This dude probably bathes in deer piss before heading out to attract some adolescent deer, and he's weeping because he thinks the moose was agitated.

Well at least you're upfront about being unable to understand well-reasoned arguments.

Just read the whole thread. I have to agree with Roger and those who are siding with the snowmobiler.

A lot of people are saying he could have turned off to the left at the beginning. If you look at the video closely, he glances to the left at the 0:03 mark. In that split second, you can see that the path looks to be a U-turn.. and not near as used as the current path they were on. If my son is behind me, I'm certainly not veering around and putting him between myself and the moose on a possibly unsafe path.. so you can throw that option out.

I think, as many have stated, the best option (which is obvious in hindsight) would have been to wait it out.. but hey, that didn't happen. He couldn't veer off the path or turn around.. snow was too deep.. too dangerous.. we don't know if the snowmobile had the ability to reverse..

The moose came at him 3 times. There was nothing else he could do at that point.

Should have been more patient.. but if those things just hang around for hours as Roger said, he may have eventually tried to scare it off and had the same scenario play out anyway.

Because it doesn't fit with the story they want to tell.

Lots of opinions in here.

I would have shot the moose a lot earlier.

But that's just me.
Has anyone else climbed a tree to get away from one,and then had a moose try to knock the tree down?

Human>moose

Yeah, I'm just going to say I respect everyone's opinion, I'm not going to change anyones mind. A Moose isn't bambi, it's a huge, obstinate and sometimes violent animal and they share their habitat with humans. Moose/human interactions don't always end well because mooose are incapable of rational thought and humans are prone to irrational behavior under stress. I don't know what I would do in his situation.

I don't know how much sledding you've done but as long as that moose was blocking the trail the only place he could've gone was backwards. He'd have stalled in that deep powder.

It definitely wasn't a "baby", a younger cow for sure though.

I do agree with this. I would have just stayed still, and see what the moose would have done. If it moves closer to me, I shout at it. If it moves even closer, I shoot the gun above my head. If it gets even closer, well I'm not taking my chances, and the moose would die. He was just an idiot for trying to get closer to the moose.

I definitely think his did, it looked like a newer sled, and I don't agree with the way he handled it. Just thought I should throw it out there that reverse is the exception, not the norm.

It's a snow mobile, it goes through snow. Doesn't always need a path. Go the F around it.

Good luck on your next snowmobiling excursion. Bring flares, you're gonna need em.
