If it was so important then wouldn't people have passed the knowledge on to apprentices?

I'm referring to the entire civilization being destroyed, not just the individuals. The volume of knowledge in Western Europe lost between 300 A.D. and 500 A.D. is absolutely staggering. It would be the equivalent of going from man walking on the moon to rubbing two sticks together to make fire.

The "Dark Ages" were actually only a couple of years due to a number of natural disasters which wrecked civilization. Most are recorded in history, but the timing doesn't line them up as being within the same decade because the correlation of the calendar systems of various civilizations from long ago is a difficult task which has not been done correctly.

I have nothing additional to add, but reading these threads makes me want to go back and take more world history in college.

Certainly wish I had paid attention more in some of the world history classes I took. There were some fascinating civilizations that had remarkable technology with just the basic of tools. Core no. 7 from ancient Egypt is another one of these "how in the world did they do this" scenarios. Perfectly round cores cut from solid granite over 4000 years ago.
