When I was in school my dad gave me an "emergency only" credit card that I put things on all the time. Laptops, books, you name it. Turns out he was paying about double the minimum every month so I had about $15k when I graduated. All has been paid by now but it was a sonofabitch.
Now knocking out student loans one at a time.

So you're saying credit debt is a good thing?
A little bit is. Keep the debt under 20% of your available credit though.

Huh?
This isn't even a legit question. Who the hell actually carries a monthly balance greater than $0?

Don't understand this at all.

I can tell you that it does nothign for your credit to pay off your balance every month.
Not that it hurts you, but if you're trying to get some ridiculous high credit score, it's best to keep a balance around the 20% range of your limit. For whatever dumb reason, the credit reporting agencies think it's more responsible to carry a minor balance than to pay it off in full each month.
So wrong.
1. Credit scores/reporting is not a measure of financial responsibility, but an estimation of risk to the lender based on previous behavior and commitments.
2. Statement balances are reported to the credit bureaus and factor into your credit utilization, which is not persistent data. I can receive a statement for $200 and pay it off within the grace period, and all that will show up on my credit report is the statement balance of $200 for that credit reporting period.

if you have two cards with a total credit limit of $10,000, keep your balance under $2000

When I was young a stupid I ran up my CC debt and it took me years to pay it down. I spent my 20's running it up, my 30's paying it down, and now I'm in my 40's and have learned my lesson well. I'm proud to say now though I do not carry any CC debt. I have a CC that I use for mostly business expenses. But I turn in my receipts, get reimbursed, and use that money to pay it back down to 0 each month.
If you are racking up high amounts on your credit card, this can actually hurt your credit, even if payed off on time. I make my clients give me a credit card for this very reason.

$0.00
Had about $12000 in 2008. Cut them all up and started a payment plan. Finished paying off in 2013. I currently do not have a credit card. Debit card only.

If most of you posting are married, there's a good chance your wife has a card with a balance that's in both your names.
If you have kids with said wife, then it's damned near certain b/c she gives into them little frickers' "I want that!" bullshite.

I'm thinking it's below $20,000 now but not sure. Monthly cash flow is so much better if you pay the minimum. Hopefully it will be paid off in just 12-14 years

I don't understand how have a standing balance of $2,000 and paying god knows what in interest is better than $0 balance.

I have an old balance on a card that I'm working down to $0...that's it really. I pay my other ones every month so it helps me control my spending and keep my credit score really high.
