I think it's just an advance in investigative techniques and technology. A lot of potential serial killers are caught now well before they have a chance to reach the status of the ones from the 60s and 70s
Recently we had one of our work vehicles go missing for 2 months and then when someone finally noticed decided to report it. The police showed up with over 100 different photos on maybe a dozen Bay Area freeways, interstates, highways, that took perfect photos of the vehicle identifying it over those two months. They could pin point what neighborhood the person was keeping the vehicle.
Way too much data out there for people to try and commit crimes and expect to not get caught

Another interesting angle is many serial killers suffered serious head trama as a child.
I’d add physical, mental, verbal abuse by a parent/ guardian. I listen to Serial Killers podcast on Spotify and more episodes than you think start off with those root causes. Like I said above, Ed Kemper is a prime example. Richard Speck is another. When authorities asked why Speck killed 8 nurses in Chicago, he replied, “ I guess it just wasn’t their night.” Chilling!
ETA Ted Bundy is an outlier. He had a couple traumatic events in his life. He grew up thinking his grandparents were his parents and his mom was his sister until he found his birth certificate in high school proving he was a bastard child.
Ted and his college girlfriend split up because he realized he couldn’t give her the lavish lifestyle she was accustomed to living. He was devastated. Once he gained his confidence back, he won her back only to leave her and make her feel the pain she put him through. All his victims were almost identical in features to that girl (Diane Edwards)

anyone who abuses an animal or finds humor in it has serial killer potential

The accepted number a half decade ago for ACTIVE serial killers was 50 but I think that’s way low. Probably 4 times that. And in this culture it’s probably going to explode in another 10 years or so.

They also guess there have been a lot of active duty military serial killers. They say that some of their kills can be covered as accidents, and that moving from place to place may never link all of their kills together.

I’m sure there’s several roaming the streets of Baton Rouge that have shot and killed 3 or more people and haven’t been caught yet in NBR. They could be pumping gas right next to you on Perkins.

One of the theories I've heard was lead paint led to people losing their minds during this time frame.
Also leaded gasoline.

Way too many young girls and women go missing without a trace in Louisiana never to be heard or see again for there not to be people living with captives. The movie “Don’t Breathe” made my skin crawl. Just like that couple that went missing who had the LSU license plates and dog crate missing. shite like that goes on every single day probably.

Man I remember there was a sniper who would pick random targets in some state. There’s a whole documentary on it had the whole state on edge and I don’t blame em

Technically there are tons in Chicago, Detroit, Compton, North Baton Rouge, etc
This is correct putting it likely in the thousands. Every urban city in America has multiple if going by technicalities. Chicago has a motherlode.
