How many different combos for Mega Millions?
If you have a 1 in 175 million shot at winning, can you purchase 175 million tickets and be assured of winning? I know that you run the risk of sharing the winning ticket.

MegaMillions board

ETA: and that is a gigantic risk. You lose something like 30 mil if you split with just one other person.

Eta: 175mm isn't the exact number, but the point is understood.

If you randomly pick the number, no, it isn't assured.

If you systematically take all combinations..... Then you are good

The problem is that it is impossible to get that many tickets.

I cant imagine the logistical headache of going through that many tickets to find a winning one

Several years ago a syndicate put together teams to purchase lottery tickets when the jackpot exceeded the odds of winning.

As I recall the group was able to buy something like 60% of the possible combination of numbers before the drawing...and they LOST! The winning number was in the 40% of numbers they had not purchased. They won some of the lesser prizes with their tickets so they recovered some of their costs.

I remember that case because other ticket purchasers were complaining about how many tickets the syndicate's buyers were buying at one time thus creating long lines for other purchasers.

This is a terrible hypothetical idea for a few reasons.

One: the odds are closer to 1 in 25 billion (56^5 times 47, according to the other thread that gave you those number choices).

Two: taxes after winning.

Three: one or more other people getting the number right.

You could scan tickets and import into excel with some sort of conditional formatting to identify matching numbers. Keep track of the tickets and find the one with all green cells, for example, go to that ticket in the stack and boom.

There was an interesting thread on here about a lottery game in New England called Cash Windfall or something. Instead of working like a normal lottery, this game maxed its jackpot and then rolled over prizes to smaller values. So, in three to six months or so of no one winning the jackpot, a bunch of mathematicans would probably hundreds of thousands of tickets and would almost be assured of making a handsome profit.

They discontinued the game because the "tax for the stupid" became "the benefit for the brilliant".

I hate to even scan one document, let alone 175 million.
