I hear the term "High Rise" bandied about when describing certain bridges. What constitutes a "High Rise" bridge? What is the minimum height above the water for it to be deemed "High Rise"? Are there negative connotations associated with the term?

A bridge that rises high over the water, not a bridge that does not rise high.

Well the one in Nola regularly has shootings on it, so in a way, I guess there are.

The name of the bridge is "High Rise Bridge". It's not a type of bridge, it is the name of a particular bridge recently built in VA.

I don’t know. But that water will still be cold. Deep, too.

Lets ocean going ships get under it. Norfolk VA has one, but mostly they have tunnels.

This one is high rise enough for me. From the side, far away, it doesn't look that bad but when you're driving up to it, it looks like it goes straight up into the air. And I hate heights anyway.

I was scared shitless the first time I ever rode over it in a car with my dad driving.

Then I had to ride over that sumbitch back in the 70s in the back of my uncle's pickup truck, before that other bridge was there and it was two-way traffic. My cousins had done it lots of times and thought it was great fun. They said later that there was the sound of "a little girl screaming." I don't remember it that way but I didn't really enjoy it. They have never let me forget it.

I don't think it's a defined term. Just relative to other nearby bridges.

It just means it's not a level span, lift bridge, or a low-rise bridge.

It's as official a term as a "humpback" bridge is.

If the highest occupied floor is 75' above street level, then by code it's a high rise.

That's based on a fire department being able to combat a fire from below.

ETA: I missed the bridge part. My bad. Carry on. Probably has to do with cargo ship clearance.

a friend of mine used to be the CEO of AMEX, when he got the job they told him to pick any place in the building he wanted for an office as long as it wasn't above the 8th floor, he asked why was that? because that was the tallest ladder the NYFD had, at least at the time

New Orleans has had the Highrise for at least 55 years behind the Gentilly Schweggmann's

Is that the bridge in Port Arthur ? I dream of going over the peak and the bridge not having anything on the other side.

That is one steep bridge. I think it holds some sort of record for the highest peak in the shortest span.
