How Did We Get To The Social Climate We Are In?

I am mainly talking about how quick people are to stop buying a certain brand or stop shopping at a certain place because that company or a person who is associated with that company said/did something they don't agree with.
On the politics board someone claims they are done with Newsmax and will never watch again because some guy left an interview with that My Pillow guy. These are people who don't watch Fox anymore because they evidently called the presidential election early or some bullshite.
Personally, I think its entertaining to see people get so pissed off about things that at the end of the day.. Doesn't mean frick, but when did all of this start? Is it something that has always been a thing, but we hear it more because of social media or is it something that has increased over the years?

Social media and societal boredom.
ETA: By societal boredom I mean that we haven't had a war or anything existential to both refocus priorities and bring people together for a common goal.
ETA2: We didn't have any really big problems relative to what humans have faced historically, so we magnified small problems or created them from nothing, and in doing so created actual rifts within our own society.

First off I think you have to realize how fricking stupid you are. And how your overt stupidity distorts your view on all facets of life. With that realization you should be able to draw the conclusion that 1) your opinion on all matter of subjects is invalid (an unwanted) and B) You should never post on TD.com again.
