How come Brodie knobs aren’t standard manufacturers trim options?

I thought they were illegal in Louisiana, but it looks like they aren't.

Steering wheel knobs are often attached to the steering wheel with a set of screws. In some cases, the knob can come loose while driving and cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

As mentioned earlier, some states have laws that specifically ban or regulate the use of steering wheel knobs. Here is a list of those states:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas
Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois
Indiana, Kentucky, Maine
Massachusetts, Minnesota
Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada
New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina
Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island
South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas
Virginia, Wisconsin

Where the name came from…

quote:

. The "Steering Wheel Spinner Knob" was invented by Joel R. Thorp of Wisconsin in 1936. The Brodie name is a reference to Steve Brodie and was meant to describe all manner of reckless stunts. The device is often called a "suicide knob" because of being notoriously useless for controlling the wheel during an emergency.

ETA….

quote:

It is also called a "knuckle buster" because of the disadvantage posed by the knob when letting go of the steering wheel after going around a corner, the wheel spins rapidly and the knob can hit the user's knuckle, forearm, or elbow. If the driver is wearing a long-sleeved the protruding accessory on the rim of the steering wheel can also become caught in the open cut by the button.

Until you get in a wreck and the airbag deploys sending that thing hurtling across the vehicle like a missile. Now a days your steering wheel is basically a grenade. Best to not add any shrapnel to the system.
