Key.
Admittedly, we do spend our money on nice things for our home or nice meals, but we promised each other and ourselves years ago that no matter how high our income may take us we wouldn't become idiots buying stupid cars, clothes, etc.
We still hem and haw about a weekend trip to Houston when we certainly don't need to make it a big deal. But IDK man. It's just what we swore we would always keep in check.
It's outright stupid some of the shite people commit to when they start to make more money.

If you are in that situation than you need to spend less than you take in. In these situations you cut all unnecessary things and if you are still living on a credit card than maybe you need to readjust your life style a bit. Alot of people I hear complaining live in a house they can't afford with brand new vehicles and have to havd the latest and greatest tech along with eating out 3-5 times a week. Lots of people do not understand the difference between a luxury and a necessity.

but a lot of this shite is driven by the impact Covid had on the economy.

Biden and his administration are responsible for a lot of that, no?
The government’s response to Covid was Trump’s call, not Biden’s. Biden continued what Trump did, then wound down those policies.
Anyone who sees massive Covid spending and blames Biden is betraying that they only want to ignore reality and blame the party they don’t like.

Are we going to ignore the makeup of Congress as well, showing we only want to blame the party we don’t like?

Since moving to NOLA, it’s insurance that’s the killer… auto, homeowner, life (since I had to renew expired term at a more seasoned age), etc.
It never ends.
It never ends.

I've known quite a few people that get anywhere from 20-40 hours of overtime per week and budget to those numbers. That might be good eating for 5 years but when the big boss says, "no more OT", they're scrambling to sell shite to make ends meet. I've always lived my lifestyle on a 40 hour work week.

This board really loves to look in others pockets all the while acting like they never heard of generational wealth.
Generational wealth doesn't account for the number of luxury vehicles driving around.

Us too. You figure if someone makes $20/hr and works 20 hours of OT per week, that's an extra $400/week. You live on 40, put the OT in the bank and in 5 years, you'll have over $100K in savings.
But no...I need that new Ford Raptor in my yard

Income is being supplemented by Only Fans & periodic Go Fund Me's.
Once Jr's SS disability claim gets approved, we can probably drop the GFM gig.

Lots of good suggestions on philosophy, mostly comes down to living below your means if you want to get ahead. Some practical ideas:
- shop all insurance every year. Insurance companies use algorithms to determine who isn’t like to shop every year and then raise those people’s rates the most. Use an independent brokerage like Goosehead or a good local broker
- vehicles are a big lever. The newer and fancier it is the more it costs to insure. Many nice new and used vehicles out there for approximately $35,000. If your ego requires a new truck, then stop complaining about being poor.
- eating out at most restaurants is a terrible value! But there are many really good local places that are good and fun for a reasonable price. I can feed my family with great food at a local Thai place for $50. Mexican joints are super cheap and good. Try any national chain and pay $20 a plate for pretty bad food.
- pork and dark meat chicken are cheap. Avoid steak and seafood. If you want a steak buy less popular cuts like Tri tip and sirloin and do your magic on the grill
