re: How can American society fix this mass shooter phenomenon?

It’s not just the availability that has created the culture. We have created the culture. We are so desensitized to fake and real violence on a societal level that our I’ll members of society sometimes take actions that they wouldn’t if they were in another culture. News, TV, movies, and music. Plus violent criminals get out of jail easily.
I’m not a religious person, and so don’t believe in any gods or any magic, but it’s fair to say nevertheless that we have a spiritual problem in this country.
I think what you speak to also lends to my point that I don't really think it's fixable, or at least, I don't see the options to fix it. Just doesn't seem feasible.

Could be wrong but I think you and I are in 100% agreement here.
quote:The issue I have is we are so hellbent in “bandaid” management that no one will address the underlying cause.
Availability to guns is the issue, but making stricter laws doesn't solve it because the availability in part has created a certain culture around it that would allow it to continue even if we enacted stricter laws. I think that's what you're saying as well.
Also, good luck trying to get the American populace to support anything that would curtail the disconnect, not to mention the politicians.
There are an excessive number of studies which show increased suicidality with excess social media usage and, I can’t find it at the moment, one pretty jarring study which shows the increase went up rapidly after Facebook was opened to all people, not just college kids.
The data is there, we just don’t know how to act on it within the confines of our social/political system.

We secure courthouses, hospitals, and government offices but do absolutely nothing to secure schools.
Funds need to be diverted to arming and armoring actual guards at public schools around the nation.
What deters a shooter is knowing there’s someone there who can match him in firepower.

Liasion police officers at every school, at all times. We had one at our high school, but apparently they are needed at middle and even elementary schools as well. Plenty women and older guys could do this easily as long as they are properly trained to use firearms.

Even if this is correct, and maybe it is...how sad is it that we have to actually want our kids to go to school with armed guards all around because there's no other viable options?
Just a terrible situation all around. But yea, that would certainly be better than the alternative, which we saw yesterday.

Prior to COVID there were several mainstream documentaries about just how much damage social media was doing, particularly to girls. At the time I felt there was a spark that could be capitalized on by right and left (after all, these were coming from filmmakers on Netflix targeting "big business").
Unfortunately, I think COVID ended that moment, but the studies and data are out there. We've created a harsh, bleak, cruel world for kids to live in that doesn't offer the true hope or joy or fun or constructive difficulty of the real world.
The instant feedback (dopamine?) cycle is just catastrophic. Post a nude, get attention. Support cause get positive reinforcement immediately. Post the wrong thing get immediate ridicule and soul crushing critique.

quote:I don’t ever talk politics in a serious manner in real life.
But mainly, I can honestly say I never ever ever ever talk politics in my "real life" with anyone. When someone makes a comment, I just nod or say "yea" or whatever. I give absolutely nothing, I won't even remotely have a political conversation with family, friends, strangers or anyone in my day to day life.
I like discussing fun topics, but I don’t give off what my actual views are on anything.
I also NEVER talk politics at work. People take it too seriously.

Scruffy and shel311 are having a real breakthrough today!!

Exactly. We are on a path to ruin. Not because of these shootings, but the shootings are a symptom.

I don't even really follow politics anymore. I vote in most elections but otherwise I attempt to tune it all out these days.

Salmon admonishing posters for talking about politics is high comedy
I'm not admonishing anyone for talking about politics.
My comments were purely concerning the constant "doom and gloom" type posts that certain posters gravitate towards.

Focus less on gun control and focus MORE on mental health issues

This is the type of post I'm talking about.
What does this mean?
and why does any optimism about the future get shouted down? or met with severe criticism?
I have kids, therefore, I feel the need to have optimism about the future. I don't understand this constant state of doom.

You literally agreed with WDE that Scruffy should stop talking about politics
Posted on 5/25/22 at 11:13 am to Sun God
No. I literally agreed with WDE that Scruffy was a better poster when he didn't focus on politics so much.

You should read the posts you quote better
Took me awhile to learn that too
