By being insignificant enough that nobody wants to be me.
I checked my ATM balance the other day and it printed me a coupon for ramen noodles.

Yeah we were in a panic and wasn’t sure what to do so we spent about $700 a year to get the top package that Lifelock offered but knowing what I know now, I would not do that again. We just didn’t get the value out of it we thought we would and they are a hard sale pitch if you try to cancel, they virtually won’t take, “No we want to cancel” for an answer.
We use bank accounts that update us anytime our debit or charge card is used and also gives us our credit rating each month, also keeping our credit permanently locked with the 3 bureaus.
Locking your credit works best especially if you’re not one to do spur of the moment financing. I don’t care if it took me an extra 3-4 days to finish a purchase it would be worth it to not have my credit availability stolen again.

"So how do you protect yourself from this?"
i did not lock my credit at the major three credit services but flagged it high alert so i get informed of hard credit checks... to prevent / catch fake accounts made under my name...
my account now informs me of transactions on my phone..so i can see the few dollar test and certainly the large move and call my bank asap to stop it.
my bank has me on high watch...they allowed some very large single event movement of money. they thought i was just moving to a schwab investment account and citi investment account..... (btw bsnk covered my loss...which was significant)
i lowered the amount i keep in checking..keep more in savings which is harder to get stolen.
i have a security service now...it searches for me and also goes into the dark web searching and cleaning
i locked my ssn but i am retired so no need for others to run checks on it for jobs or loans
