History Time: Europe was saved from Mongol Conquest only because the Khan died.

Subutai had just taken Hungary and was beginning his plans to move on the Holy Roman Empire and into Western Europe when news arrived of Ogedei Khan's death.

The Armies had to return to Mongolia for the election fo the next Khan, which completely stalled the conquest while it was in it's groove. The Mongols didn't return for decades.

And, just to bolster Subutai's bad-assness, he put down a Russian Revolt on the way home.

It's crazy to think that if the Khan had only lived for two more years, Europe would have been subjects of the Mongol Empire.

Carlin’s series on the Khans was absolutely fascinating. At one point he said you could make a list of top generals in history and the Mongol generals under Ghengis and Ogedei have a good argument for 2-3 on the top 10 list by themselves.

Subutai being one of them.

I don't believe he attended the Kuraltai. The Mongols really struggled in Europe taking stone castles, finding pastur land for their enormous horse heards, and they really needed winter campaigns to cross frozen rivers to move at speed. Kings and Generals has a very in depth podcast just on the mongols.

Underrated movie scene.

If you’d like a concise description of Moorish activity in Sicily, I recommend Dennis Hopper’s monologue to Christopher Walken in “True Romance”.

Perhaps the greatest movie scene in history.

The mongols seemed unstoppable but it’s also not a complete certainty they could have conquered all Europe. I wouldn’t have bet against them, but the change in terrain would’ve taken some adjustment. The Hungarian plains were perfect for their steppe warriors. Taking stone castles also was not easy although they brought in Chinese engineers for the job.

Egypt was spared Mongol conquest for the same reason. The Mongol army defeated by the Mamelukes was a shell of the original invading army.

Sicily was something of a Mediterranean crossroads. You had Italians, Albanians(Contessa Entellina) , ethnic Greeks from Siracusa. An Arabic speaking minority along the Southern Coast around Castellvetrano. The Norman's owned it for a while. It was the Crusader's forward operating base which was heavily French. There are a fair amount that can trace themselves to Lebanon....and strangely Persia...not a lot but it seems that there was migration particularly of Persian Jews that intermarried and became Catholics.

Turks and Mongols both came from the central Asian steppes. Turks came to Europe first. Then Mongols overran Turkic areas. Then when the Mongols disintegrated the Ottoman Turks came to power.
