On May 26, 1521, Cortez and his combined force of Spanish and native allies besieged the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan (modern day Mexico City). The battle would go down in history as the bloodiest in the history of the Western Hemisphere with more than 200,000 combined casualties when all was said and done.

The Aztec Empire was a blood-thirsty nation who had drawn the ire of their native neighbors for decades. With the arrival of the Spanish under Cortez, these natives now had a willing ally to take on their long-hated rival.

No shame. Cortez’s conquest of the Aztecs was a net good for the Americas.

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
And the palace in the sun

What’s funny is the Viceroy of Cuba hated Cortez and hoped that sending him to deal with the Aztecs would be a suicide mission.

Instead, with just a few hundred conquistadores and skillful diplomacy, Cortez dismantled the most powerful empire in the Americas in like two years. It gets overshadowed a bit, but it’s one of the most remarkable conquests in human history.

It certainly helped Cortez that the subjugated native tribes like the Tlaxcalans hated the Aztecs and that the natives viewed the Spanish as strange divine beings.

I would love go back in time to be a fly on the wall for the first meeting between Cortez and the Aztecs 500 years ago. Two alien cultures from completely different worlds interacting for the first time. There must have been a great deal of mutual curiosity and fear. If Cortez made even a slight mistake in his initial meetings with the Aztecs, he and his men could easily have all been killed, and he’d be a footnote in history.

Wasn't Cortez sleeping around with his daughter outside of marriage? It was either his daughter or someone related to him.

Yeah, I believe it was his daughter.

It was supposed to be a one-way trip to the Aztecs. His plan for revenge backfired spectacularly, as Cortez became the Alexander the Great of his era.

It’s kind of crazy to think about. That would be like aliens landing and the Palestinians teaming up with them to attack the Jews.
