OP needs to learn to go to ERs under a made up name. Don’t even have to be homeless, just pretend you forgot your license and credit card at home. Fake name, fake address, etc. What is the ER going to do? EMTALA prevents them from turning you (or the people you rant about) away.

I save so much money by not paying for health insurance. When any of my 6 kids get sick I just take them to the ER.

Do your kids have pediatricians? Their sick visits are going to be way cheaper in their office.

Can anyone explain to me why hospitals like Our Lady of the Lake are nonprofits to the point that they have to donate tens of millions each year to retain their non-profit status, but are still so focused on profit margins?

Hospital/medical billing is so fricked. Zero transparency on pricing from one facility to another. Then trying to navigate the independent contractor nonsense and figuring out who involved in your care are in/out of network is insane.

I learned, at least with Memorial Hermann, their in house imaging is a total scam and the doctors IN THE SAME BUILDING don't realize it. I had two identical ultrasound procedures done about 6 weeks apart, in the same calendar year. The first was $1100. The second was $1400.

I found an imaging "wholesaler" and got the next couple of ultrasounds done for $125 a pop, cash. Green Imaging is essentially a broker for imaging, and will find you usually independent shops and you save $$$. I got a CT done for under $200, too.

I told my PCP what happened, and she vowed to start referring patients outside of MH to save money.

ive been hand writing 25 dollar checks every month since I had an emergency appendectomy over 3 years ago

They maxed out my out of pocket to the tune of 3,500.

They've never sent a threatening letter or anything. I just keep sending 25 dollar checks

We don’t have healthcare in this country, we have sick care. Insurance, especially medical, is one of the largest scams known to man and are 100% in bed with the medical/pharma industries to screw the payer

A reminder that Insurance companies wrote Obamacare, which was then shoved down our throats and upheld by huge pussy John Roberts.

Not one doctor came in to see her, just nurses and assistants every 8 hours. Discharged on Sunday morning.

this is 1000% bullshite no matter how dramatic you're being.

nurses can't diagnose. unless it was a nurse practitioner who is able to diagnose and an MD signs off on their assessment.

either way, your statement is incorrect

Memorial Hermann is the worst about a lot of things. They want to completely control their patients and don't let you know that you can do anything differently. They want you to believe there is nowhere else you can go. If you have to go to any post acute services and ask to go outside their system, they will send the doctor in to explain why that's a bad idea!

my wife had to bring our 1 year old in the other day because he fell and hit his head on the cement and vomited after.

She came home pissed because the waiting room was full of able-bodied non-payers on a Tuesday morning and the billing clerk stalked my wife incessantly to get her credit card to pay the co-pay. She’s not very political but she was that evening.

I don't disagree. What was particularly disturbing (but no unexpected) is that the doctors in their own shop didn't understand any of the cost impact of what MH procedures directed them to do.

If you want to laugh even more, I have an example that's even worse. Adenoids removed on my toddler. I get a bill that includes about a $700 charge for a teaspoon equivalent of IV Acetaminophen. It retailed for about $40 a liter on the web. I offered a settlement of $50, and it took almost three years, and they eventually gave up. I told them to send me to collections in the first of at least seven letters.

If the doctor (great guy) would have known what was going to happen, he almost certainly would have told me to give her a teaspoon of Tylenol in the waiting room pre surgery, and it would have cost me ten cents. But I don't think he knew.
